For doting parents, gold-plated umbilical cords
Calligraphy brushes made of child's hair also available in S. Korea

Calligraphy brushes made of child's hair also available in S. Korea
Updated: 10:34 a.m. ET Nov. 30, 2004SEOUL - Forget desktop photographs of your children. Doting South Korean parents can preserve their child’s umbilical cord in acrylic resin to make a personal seal or even have it gold plated.

In this Confucian society where family values are highly prized, suppliers also offer services for parents to have traditional Korean calligraphy brushes made from their child’s hair.

Shim Jae-cheol of U&I Impression said the firm had gold-plated about 80 to 100 umbilical cords a month since starting business in August, with prices ranging from 80,000 won to 100,000 won ($76 to $96). It also offers mail order.

South Korean law allows parents to keep the umbilical cord of their children, although sales to a third party would be illegal.

Another supplier, Agamo, which makes calligraphy brushes made from human hair and preserves umbilical cords in personal seals, hopes to branch out to Japan.

“The company got the idea from mothers just storing umbilical cords and navels in an album or what-not,” said Suk Tae-jin of Agamo.

Keeping children’s umbilical cords and making calligraphy brushes from their hair have long been a tradition in Korea.

:alienhuh: ummmm.... eiw

Differences in morals and cultures at it's prime ;)

I think it's kinda gross personally but looking at it from a South Koreans standpoint, it would be like getting your birth certificate framed.

I don't think its gross at all, different but not gross. Maori tradition here in N.Z takes the umbilical cord and the afterbirth and plants it in the earth either with a tree or a seed to grow into a tree and it symbolises the life force and fertility and essence.

I've heard of mothers that EAT the umbilical cord, for it's nutritional value ;). Now thats gross - but then, kinda makes sense in a way - dogs do the same, don't they? And what could be a better post-natal restorative? perhaps thats what nature intended all along...:)

I don't know about the umbilical cord being kept... that's a bit off.

The use of locks of hair for caligraphy brushes...I don't see what the big deal is. People keep locks of their child's hair all the time. I know that I've got one of my son's first haircut :D

The lattar gives me an idea though... human-hair brushes :D I can make a deal with some barber shops and hair-salons to keep their spare-hair and make brushes from it.... hmmm

/me wanders off mumbling to himself

Yeah, I've got a lock of v2.0's from his first haircut as well. Many folks keep the cord for the stem cells within, and possible medical use down the road, but I'm not sure I'd want it as a decorative piece. Hell of an icebreaker, though.

Deer actually eat their babies poop for a while till the baby is strong enough to run. Keeps the babies scent from being detected by other animals.

So, how about when you die? Would you want to become a diamond?

now that is kewl :lloyd: Theoretically...

sure beats leaving your corpse to rot six feet under...

Nope, when I die I want to be cremated and my ashes spread some place that means something special to me.

The diamond thing could be problematic: because then it puts material worth on your own life - and I mean, what would happen if I were to be lost, stolen or sold like a piece of Jewellery? agh

Nice to find a female who doesn't get offended by my off-the-wall humor without getting to 'know me' first. :worship:
