NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Reuters) - A 14-year-old boy shot dead the driver of a school bus on Wednesday in front of 24 terrified fellow students, police said.
Killed was Joyce Gregory, 47-year-old mother of two children, ages 11 and 13, who were not on the bus when the killing occurred.
Investigators said she had stopped to make a pick-up at the home of the boy who did the shooting, which happened in a rural area about 50 miles northwest of Nashville.
The students already on the bus ranged in age from five to 17, and one boy grabbed the wheel when the vehicle lurched forward after the driver was shot, steering it to a halt against a pole.
Tennessee Bureau of Investigation chief Mark Gwynn told a news conference the alleged shooter was disarmed and in custody within 45 minutes and has been charged with first degree murder under a juvenile statute. A mental evaluation has also been ordered.
