WOW - I'm totally buying furniture from the Brick from now on.

[font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Did you get a Christmas bonus last year? Have you ever received a monetary thank you from your company? Then you can imagine how Shahida Alam feels.

Except, you probably can’t.

Because her bonus was almost beyond belief.

Alam has worked for The Brick furniture store chain for 16 years, in a job she calls “her life”. So when the company went public this month and $40 million flooded into its coffers, owner Bill Comrie decided to share the wealth with his dedicated employees.

He made a satellite-fed announcement to every store in the country, telling them they’d be rewarded depending on their years of service.

And Alam more than filled the bill. Her share of the largesse? A cheque for an eye-opening $50,000.

She’s still astounded at the generosity. “In a lot of companies you don't always know that you're appreciated,” she smiles. “And this bonus gift is definitely a great recognition.”

Alam says she’s now going to buy a car, and may pick up a few other items she’s always wanted.

One thing she won’t be getting? A new job. She’s happy where she is. And based on the new size of her bank account, it’s obvious her employer is happy with her, too.

I wish I could get a bonus like that.

And notice, I never mentioned that Leslie spelled the word color wrong. :grinno:

That was very generous of you Mr Gato, sir (non-military version usage) Not mentioning Leslie's misspelling of color was quite appropriate given the circumstances. Quite honorable indeed.

Goodthing for her it happened in Canukki.

Had it happened here she would have raped by F.I.C.A. and/or gift tax.

How does one "receive it" in Canada on such gifts.

I only have two questions...
1. How does the bonus from the Brick affect her buying choice?
2. Are you getting a benefit out of this, too, Leslie?

She didn't spell it wrong, if she's English. It's like the proper pronunciation of aluminum. (al-oo-min-yem. The Paper Dictionaries have it. Dictionary.com uses the american butchering of it)

We didn't butcher it. We perfected it.

Do yer even know why the US changed it? :nerd:

I'll give ya a clue.......it has to do with a hatred of the Brit aristocracy...second president Adams......a spelling book written by a bloke called Webster and Webster doing nothing but sitting on his arse for over a decade :D

A facinating story, it brings to mind the word ironic :nerd:

Gee...that shows a lot of things about you, Digital. You don't tolerate religion...you don't tolerate US spelling...you don't like US politics (except for the Green Party  )...I have a question. Why do you even stay in the US...where all three things exist together?

Actually...it was to save money on printing supplies...namely ink. ;) Just because you Brits are spendthrifts, it doesn't mean we, in the US, have to be. :grinyes:

Yup, that's about the size of it......Adams wanted a "new dictionary" that got rid of all the hoity-toity talk of the brit elite.....webster first introduced his "spelling book" which Adams aproved of.....it was printed and distributed to schools etc. Adams then gave the go-ahead for the state funded Dictionary......then for 12 years the government refused to give poor Webster the cash.

Webster, of course, was an absolute headcase..........scholars in the UK were eargerely, not to mention patiently, awaiting his alterations to the language....several debates had already been held here on the use of silent letters and the ever famous "u" or not to "u". Then of course webster cocked it all up by taking "modern" words, for example Autumn, and replacing them with old, outdated olde english words like Fall.

He seemed as determined to take backwards steps with the English lingo as he did forward ones

The Oxford Press took one look at his dictionary......and decided to leave him to his own devices :nerd:

So Oxford decided not to improve upon Webster's 'mistakes', and your spelling rules never changed...Sounds like a 'cop-out' to me... :grinyes:...Also sounds like Oxford didn't want to 'follow' an obviously misguided 'colonist'... ;)

hehe! you furriners do like to think that the hatred following the war of independance was universal don'tcha? :D (actually, even during the war there continued to be collaborations between the countries in the fields of science, the arts and various....intellectual types don't seem to care who is shooting who....as long as it doesn't interfere with their work).

It's true that Webster did make some radical, maybe even innovative changes to the langauge.....but like I said, he was a bit of a weirdo....some of his changes were made very arbitrarily and many just made no sense whatsoever (surely even the most brit-hating american can't see any sense in his taking then "modern" words and insisting that words that died out of popular use anywhere, in some cases up to a couple of century's ago, makes no sense wotsoever? )

Personally I reckon that when he had used up his good ideas......he just made changes on a whim....mebbe to give himself justification for being paid ;)
