Do we have the stomach for a real war?

It's been a while since ther has been a real war...with deaths, not in the dozens, or hundreds, but in the thousands on each side. Vietnam, although listed as a 'police action', was the last that the USA was really involved in.

The questions at hand are:

Will the US resolve and popular opinion waver once (if) the body count goes to over 1000?

In this cozy time that we live in, how large of a human loss will be accepted before the ideal of war wavers as well?

With every new death, how far will Bush's popularity fall, before he realizes that he's just not going to be president for another term?

the question is...how will we know how many casualties there are?

with CNN's 'unbiased' covering i'm really curious about on what information the public opion will be based on....

Do we have...it's too late, we're there. Will it become unpopular? Depends on the length. There is talk of a siege around Baghdad, That will not be popular, nor in my never to be humble opinion, prudent.

A siege is a tough game...it takes a lot of troops to surround a city without walls...with walls around it, you only have a limited number of exits...block those...voila..a siege!

It's also very time consuming and leaves otehr nations time to 'come to the rescue'.

I'm sure that we'll know how many American/UK deaths there are...for a while at least. After a while....they'll just stop reporting it..or be asked to.

the siege of baghdad will be influenced by a great deal of troops coming in or not coming in from the north.
depending on turkey the allied forces will be able to send in troops from the north, if turkey doesn't allow that, paratroopers will have to be brought in...making the whole situation a lot more difficult.

A seige in a city of 5 million residents, a pissed off army & grocery stores seems incredibly stupid.

Shadow, we're already amassing a northern front, quietly & massively.

Turkey isn't allowing it, we pulled out yesterday there. It will have to be either Paratroopers or they could take an airport up north and start flying them in. BTW, anyone hear anything about where the 82nd Airborne is?

edit: Just to fix my fucked up grammer.

depending on how much is left from those pissed off elite troops...they shouldn't be underestimated at all, but i seriously doubt the credibility of saddam hussein when it comes to his view on these troops...

i doubt they are as strong as he wants the world to believe

BTW, anyone hear anything about where the 82nd Airborne is?
No, but I was wondering too. Their website says Kandahar, but surely that's only a detachment. I live in middle TN, so all we ever hear about is the 101st. Every local TV station has a reporter with them. I have to say, they're doing a pretty good job considering how out of place some of them look. Anyone from over Fort Bragg way got the lowdown?

I didn't make it down to your post. I was giving Gonz the 411 without reading the interceding 4 posts. I did a fast glance across them and my eyes didn't lock onto the word Afghanistan. My Benadryl hazed mind convinced me that the question had not been answered... and so I did. Sorry 'bout that.

82nd Airborne Division
Soldiers: 5,000
Home fort: Fort Bragg, North Carolina
Units: The deployed soldiers include a quick-reaction brigade combat team, which has as many as 4,000 soldiers. Also ordered to deploy were 18th Airborne Corps support elements consisting of the 35th Signal Brigade and 525th Military Intelligence Brigade. A portion of the 82nd Airborne is in Afghanistan.

Some are in Ft Sandstorm or whatever it's called in Kuwait also.

Thanks. That's my Bro's old unit. Just wondering where all his other brothers were. They haven't said much about them on the news.
