It is generally used as a short cut to represent totalitarianism & those whose ideal falls under that category.

Take Femi-nazi. This is not to be confused with feminist, who only wish for equal treatment. Femi-nazi's wish for men to die, to become subservient slaves to the oppression of the greater female command.

Oh, I agree that there's a diiference, I just think "femi-nazi" (or eco-nazi, etc.) makes them out to be worse than they generally are. :shrug:

The use of words like "feminazi" and "econazi" says a great deal more about the people that use those words than it does about the groups those people are disparaging. :shrug:

Yeah...but do I really believe in all those causes or am I playing "Devil's Advocate" in defending them...just to make the others prove their points.

I might take a stand online to defend cross-cutting of forests because of the endangered "White-throated Eurasian Swallow" and it's plight for life... but then again, I've never seen one, don't care for them, and might even curse one out if it shat on my windshield. I wouldn't miss their extinction, and probably wouldn't blink if someone told me that they'd become extinct.

BUT

If I heard about someone bitching out environmentalists because their company can't chop down a million trees all because of a swallow....I'd put on my cape and come to the rescue of the swallow in question. Why? Certainly not because of the swallow...but because of the idea that money is more important than nature.

I would think that this would make me "Devil's Advocate" - that is...someone who is argueing for a cause which s/he does not support.

but isnt taking that stand in a sense playing devils advocate for those who arent for it?

To clarify, Devil's Advocate may take the opposing stand, to argue the point. But he doesn't necessarily make that his stand. It's when you take that stand as your personal take on the issue that you change from Devil's advocate to hypocrite. It's a bit of a fine line. I may on occaision play Devil's advocate, but I try not to declare as my own any opinions that aren't mine.
