Finally!

The cds are usually bootable. I've never seen a distro that isn't. I'd try re-downloading the CDs and make sure you finalize the disc when burning.

MD5's are provided with the ISOs when you download them. Once downloaded, you use a utility to determine the MD5sum on the file and compare it to the MD5sum given on the mirror to make sure nothing corrupted or flipped while downloading.

Problem solved, hopefully. I had my friend haul his lazy ass through the blizzard to get it here.

wow, you have some good friends. i would have told you a different place to stick your floppy drive.

you might try booting from a CD that you're positive is bootable, i've got a couple cdrom drives around here that just won't boot a CD anymore.

OK, here is what happened.

I plugged in the floppy drive, booted the computer... and i got this merry little message on the BSOD: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. Yay! To top it off, the floppy drive didn't work, it didn't even get detected by BIOS. My broken drive got detected, though. So, i tried a lot of different things... Changing jumpers, BIOS and CMOS settings... Only to be slapped in the face by that ugly BSOD. So, i shut down the computer and thought, "Fuck it". I went to help my sis with her birthday party(friends only - no brothers allowed), which was yesterday btw. Just as i thought "hmm, maybe i can borrow a HDD to boot on from my friend(another friend)?", the phone rang. Guess who?
He asked if i wanted to bring my computer to his place and sleep there, before i had a chance to tell him about my problem... I swear, he has to be a psychic or something. So i spend the night there, we have a blast, except my HDD still refused to boot... Played CS, ate pizza, watched Rambo III and stayed up until 5:30 am... We had a lot of fun, simply. The next day i had an idea: Maybe i could flush BIOS and boot from a XP cd? Of course, being psychic and all, my friend has one laying around! So i do a CHKDSK, but alas - it still doesn't work. So, my friend the amazing psychic genius suggests that i try the FIXBOOT command. Of course, it works. I have him to thank for my computer working today.

To friends! :cocktail:

Um, no. I'm afraid to touch that floppy now. It doesn't matter because WOOT! My cd was bootable now! I have installed Mandrake! :D

Now, on to another problem... I forgot my login password for my internet connection... :crying3: It's stored in Mozilla but i have no idea how to extract it... Help? (*sigh* I'm cursed with problems right now... I'm sure my computer is a girl, and right now she's PMSing.)

I got it. Now how the hell do i configure Mozilla to use the web page's own fonts? It worked with my Windows Mozilla... But alas, it looks damn ugly now.

I know...it is already configured to use the page's fonts, if you look at the html code of this page, there are about 3 or 4 fonts to choose from, the font you are watching just happened to be the first in the list.

Windows doesn't have that font so the browser uses the next one...

if there's one thing i complain about linux is its fugly fonts

Allright... How do i delete that frigging font? :devious: Edit: Oh, and where do i get drivers for an ATI Radeon 9600 128 mb?

http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/
look there for info on using the MS core fonts in linux, i've never configured it myself because it's kind of a PITA on slackware.

also, you may be able to change some default fonts through your desktop enviroment. if you're using gnome, the default fonts can be configured using the gnome-font-properties program. if you're using kde you're on your own because i don't like it.
