Paul Murgatroyd was appointed Reader in 1983 having been with the group since 1972 as Lecturer and Senior Lecturer. Before moving to Loughborough he had been in government service at Malvern working on airborne radar and instrumentation. His research at Bristol (PhD 1971) was on Dielectrics.

At Loughborough he initiated research on magnetic suspensions, including digitally controlled systems, and established statistical systems for rational adjustment of exam marks. His main research is now electromagnetics applied to the design of coils. Current topics include; manufacture and application of Rogowski devices, coil-shapes by evolutionary methods, optimal design for minimum materials and ultra-sensitive differential calorimetry.
