God-Damn Canadians!! Harboring AWOL Americans

Fox news....American fluff news? You'd think so, but it's got more viewers than all other news channels in the good ol' USA. So...headliners like Bill O'Rilley have power to make their opinions stick

This man's opinion is that because of Canada 'harbouring deserters', that it should be punished severely by all Americans...that all we do up here is bellyache about the USA...etc etc ad nauseum.
Hell...I'll let you read on.
Hi, I'm Bill O'Reilly. Thanks for watching us tonight. We'll get to the war action in a moment.

OAS_AD('Middle');But first, Canada is harboring American military deserters. That is the subject of this evening's "Talking Points Memo." Out of 1.5 million Americans currently serving in the military, just two have deserted as far as we know. Army Privates Jeremy Hinzman (search) and Brandon Huey (search) have bolted to Canada, where they apparently are being well received. According to Ron Adamson, who broke the story in "The Christian Science Monitor (search)," the Canadian media generally speaking has embraced the deserters.
The Canadian Broadcasting Company said, "For more than 200 years, Americans have been escaping war and strife by heading north."

Columnists in "The Toronto Globe and Mail" wrote this: "These young men...are different from the Vietnam lot in that they weren't drafted. The United States itself is different in that it's worse. Such is a huge divide between rich and poor that these young people signed up so they could go to college.
Little did they know that the man who stole the 2000 election would boast with that unnerving, uncertain grin that he was a 'wartime president.'"
The "Globe and Mail" columnist goes on to glorify the two deserters who have now established Web sites and have publicists so in demand they are in Canada.
And guess whose letter appears on the Hinzman Web site? Hey, there Susan Sarandon. Here's what she wrote.
"In times of war there have always been soldiers who have drawn the line, and have refused to follow orders they feel in their hearts to be immoral."
That's right, Susan. They're called conscientious objectors, not a deserter.
Hinzman and Huey have applied for asylum in Canada, which by law can only be granted if a person can prove they'll be killed or persecuted in their homeland.
Since the Iraq war is undeclared, they could not be executed by the military in the USA. And they probably will be sentenced to five years in prison under the general court-martial law if they come back here. That's a prosecution, not a persecution.
If Canada grants these two asylum, that would obviously be a slap in the face to America. Harboring deserters is a serious business.
There's no question that the Canadian press has become rabidly anti-American. "The Toronto Globe and Mail," the CBC and others delight in insulting us. That, of course, is their right.
But if the Canadian government joins in and gives these deserters a home, then "Talking Points" will call for a boycott of Canada. They will join France. Enough's enough. We respect honest disagreement, but undermining our military in the middle of the war on terror by providing sanctuary for deserters, lawbreakers is a hostile act.
Canada is totally dependent on the USA for its economic well-being. It best remember that in this very serious situation.
And that's "The Memo."
Hmmm....lemme see...We're in a hostile situation with the USA? A very serious one!! Poll anyone?

Shoot the deserters & please, re-phrase this

Why...in comparison to some of the other news channels...it's almost like the inquierer.. Id' love to just kick 'em back south and be done with...but frankly, O'Rilleys getting the Cannuck back up and we're likely to do something stupid...like grant Amnesty

If you want fluff, go to the networks. As much as I detest what Vernon Jordon did, I wouldn't even call CNN fluff.

Bish, I should make note that O'Reilly is a news analyst, not a news reporter. He offers analysis and opinion. Hannity and Colmes is also an opinion show. So are Larry King Live and Cross-Fire on CNN, Hardball on CNBC/MSNBC, and so on. What is said on an opinion show doesn't make the channel's hard news "fluff."

Update...The only thing is, he freely admits that he signed up voluntarily. Since that is the case, he had the chance, at sign-up, to try for a non-combat job. He didn't, so he waits until the bullets start flying to become concientious? What a load of bull. The man in this story, primarily, is a coward and a deserter...

Well. Even though I don't agree with the Americans being in Iraq, I do agree with what you said. If this soldier was drafted well than that is different. He signed up voluntarily.

Speaking of Fox news.

Take a look at that. According to this woman, "Canada is lucky to be allowed to exist on the same continent as the USA."

How about "The average Canadian is busy dog sledding"

;)

Then you must have some hellacious cell-phone technology to communicate on a laptop over those distances. ;)

Oh we do.

Actually I am typing this right now from my dog sled.

The dogs up here are all pretty tough. They have to be to pull us through the many feet of snow.

Want to see my dog?

She's a pretty fierce lookin' eh?

Must be tough to pull a wheelbarrow full of dirt across a dry lawn. :D Them small dogs are the meanest.

I think you should spring for a pneumatic wheel for that wheelbarrow.
I'd help the little dog. :nerd:

"We share culture...why do we want to ridicule them..."

"Because they speak French" :rofl2:

Easy solution. Make it harder to get into the American army. Don't offer college incentives, then you will only have people who want to serve in the armed services.

Its pretty hard to get into the British army (as i'm finding out, Sandhurst in September if i pass the last of 3 tests) but even for normal recruits you don't get any incentives. You do get good training and industrial qualifications.

To the canucks, I met a guy from Vancouver when I went for a familiarisation visit to the signals last week. Very nice bloke, pussied out on the drinking though.

Do Americans find it hard knowing a majority of the world doesn't like them? I'm not being sarcastic, being British we all grow up knowing everyone hates us. Personally I like it, as Oscar Wilde said "Theres only one thing worse than being talked about, and thats not being talked about"

We aren't hated. That's a media fallacy. Well, sure there are some, you know, socialistic French stinkbags, the few remaining true communists, a couple of pissed off Vietcong & maybe the Chinese government.

I base this on th efact that our immigrant rolls are getting longer & longer & longer. Freedom draws everybody & we still are the Light on the Hill.

(if your premise were correct however, the answer would be "Who cares")

Hated?

The British aren't hated around here, at all.

There's a football team in london called Millwall, their fans are feared by everybody. They aren't in the premier league so luckily they don't play any european games. Their club motto is "No one likes us and we don't care". My point is its better to be feared than ignored.

To be fair life isn't a popularity contest. We have a new special forces regiment.

Come and have a go if you think your hard enough

We don't hate you chaps, either. Some of your citizens, however, are just plain rude. Kinda like some of ours... :D
