Graffiti = free speech?

Free speech = a license to protest pretty much anything you like. A catch-all.

"An 18-year-old can buy cigarettes, vote, and go into the army, but he can't buy a can of spray paint in Manhattan. It's silly."

Uh huh. Do it on yer own property then moron.

There are non-illegal uses for those things...like their original use. Touchups for cars, modeling, etc etc...

But read the article deeper - they're complaining about not allowing people under 21 to purchase spray paint or markers, they're not complaining about not allowing people to vandalize things.

There are tons of legitimate reasons to use spray paint.

This law would be like refusing to sell knives, because they can be used to stab people.

yeah, i read it.

folks are trying to frame it as a constitutional issue.

"the right to spray paint" is not a fundamental right.

the intent behind "free speech" is essentially a right to speak freely about matters political, not to paint shitty little squiggles on the sides of overpasses.

if somebody under 21 really needs spray paint, they can get mum or pop to buy it for them.

They have other choices for coloring the world. They're just harder to hide under a jacket.

The same can be said of firearms, yet loonies are lined up everywhere you look to take that right away. The misdeeds of the few have an effect on the legitmate rights of the many. Sound familiar?

Another example. Here, and in many other places, you can't walk in to a store and buy Sudafed. You must ask for it, and then can only buy 2 boxes per transaction. Why? Ephedrine. Key ingredient in meth. Same restrictions on lithium batteries. Meth cooks steal the batteries, tear 'em apart, and take out the lithium strips. Now, YOU may want lithium batteries to put in your electronics and such. Tough shit. You have to jump through hoops because of the meth cooks. Try convincing the sales clerk that you want the batteries AND the Sudafed for legit uses if yer under 21. And God help you if on this same shopping trip you happen to need some Liquid Plumber for your sink and some aluminum foil and some engine degreaser for the '49 Ford you're restoring...you'll be talking to the cops on that one for sure.

All this, and not one complaint from the populace. But let some snotass city kid be kept away from his precious spray paint, and we get lobbyists involved.

But there's no prejudice against rural areas. Nooooo.....

Those who want spray cans for graffiti will find them somehow, while those who want spray cans for modeling won't.

Hey maybe the grafs will upgrade to airbrush and this'll all be moot.

Gonna go out on a limb here.

I'd wager that more spray paint is used for graffiti in NYC than for model building. Call it a hunch.

The modelers can have their mommy get their paint, use it at home & never get caught since they're using it legitimately. The vandals can have their homey get it & when the cops nab 'em, it's just one more charge to bring.

I think the law is horseshit but having lived in a city where tagging was considered an art form by the press & a drain on teh pocketbook by everyone else *piss2* on vandals. Let 'em use canvas.

But none of that is ILLEGAL. If you need it you can get it. The spray paint they're banning people from buying. Also, why under 21? I'm SURE people over 21 vandalize stuff.

Because a hell of a lot of gang-bangers - the main spray paint culprits around here - fail to live to 21.

Probably because once you are 21 you are suppose to have a good grasp of what is right or wrong...and if you don't then you are old enough to pay the piper, so to speak.
