I hate computers

yea, what he said & most likely YOU don't need a new nic, just Su-Z-Q;)

billy billy he's our man (* tommyj27 pukes)! if he can't do it linux can! sorry, that's become my default answer to any windows related flakiness.
a lot of times windows networks take a little bit to adjust when you start rebooting machines, you can usually connect directly to the ip you're looking for even if you can't browse the network run-->"\\<insert ip here>"

When you first boot the system, you should get a list of resource allocation. Right below or part of the system summary. Press the pause key and check to see if any two devices are using the same IRQ. Just because Windows is saying otherwise, dosen't mean that an issue isn't at hand. Check to see if the sound card is sharing an IRQ with another device or if it's using IRQ 9. Move it to another slot and see if this resolves the issue.

Not all, but on some boards, the top PCI slot shares an IRQ with the AGP slot and the bottom PCI slot shares an IRQ with the USB bus. Might want to avaiod these two. This isn't the case with all boards though.

screw the nic get a new os.. 98 is horrible with network crap. sometimes you see everything, sometimes nothing, sometimes nothing then 20 minutes later something.

There is no screen at bootup that shows the resource usage. I had to check in Windows by doubleclicking on Computer. It's sharing IRQ 10 with "IRQ Holder for PCI Steering", and it doesn't change no matter what slot I put it in

Any PCI device will always "share" the IRQ with the IRQ Holder, it is just something about PCI management.

oh. Well, I installed an Aureal Vortex2 SQ2500 (AU8830) which I thought to be dead from ESD (I had it kinda close to one of my old monitors and heard a loud "POP" so I threw it in a box of junk thinking I might smash it for fun one day)

The network works, and the sound works too. :headbang:
