The first gulf war cost like 50 billion. A trillion is 20 times that amount. If we conduct a prolonged campaign with a few years annexing the whole country and then pave all of the roads with gold ...then we might come close to one trillion. I don't know how they arrived at their statistics... but it really does sound like opportunity cost voodoo to me.

Are the roads in Iraq gold now?
