It's Snowing

I have a situation on my hands.

When I do weekend Help Desk coverage, we are in the office between 7am and 4pm on Saturday. While there, I can't get into the server room because I don't have the access and authority. So the ONLY reason I'm there is to give dedicated support.

My boss STILL wants me to go to the office tomorrow. There is NOTHING that I can do there for my users that I can't do here, from home.

He said he was going to "see what he could come up with" and call me tonight. I have at most two weeks left in his department, then I start my new job. Tell me, is there any reason you can think of for me to tell him an absolute NO, I am not going in to work tomorrow?

He even offered to drive all the way to my house, pick me up, drive me to the office, then drive me home. All this because he says that *his* boss wants someone there. I don't know what this guy is thinking he's going to gain by having me there. All I know is they want me to put myself in danger for no good reason.

It took me almost two hours to get home and they're forecasting 10-14 inches by tomorrow afternoon. Here's the current report:

THE SNOW WILL TAPER OFF SATURDAY NIGHT... SO BLIZZARD CONDITIONS ARE NOT EXPECTED TO CONTINUE AS THE NIGHT PROGRESSES. SNOW WILL GRADUALLY TAPER OFF LATE SATURDAY NIGHT AND SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 10 TO 15 INCHES ARE EXPECTED. A BLIZZARD WARNING IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OR FREQUENT GUSTS OF OVER 35 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITH CONSIDERABLE FALLING AND OR BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW. VISIBILITIES WILL BECOME POOR... WITH WHITEOUT CONDITIONS AT TIMES. THOSE VENTURING OUTDOORS MAY BECOME LOST OR DISORIENTED... SO PERSONS IN THE WARNING AREA ARE ADVISED TO STAY INDOORS.

ANY TRAVEL IS STRONGLY DISCOURAGED.

If it is part of your current job, then you should do it, if working the extra time is just a plus, then the decision is up to you, whether you want the extra money or the extra time to have some rest.

If there is a risk of being stuck at the office and not be able to return home because of the weather, it seems unreasonable for your boss to demand that you go to the office tomorrow.

I have no idea. My boss said he'd call me tonight. It's 9:15 and surprise surprise, no phone call. I sent an alert on his Nextel, he didn't answer. I called his Nextel number, he has his voice mail turned on. I go to bed at 10 so all I have is 45 minutes for him to call me. Before I left he said something about calling him when I wake up. In order to make it there by 7am, I'll need to wake up at 5. Think he'll appreciate that phone call at 5am?

Luis, it is required for my present job, it's not optional. The last time we had a blizzard my boss told me not to come in. And then docked me a day's pay. These are not reasonable people we're talking about. I know you've probably never driven in a blizzard ;) but it's extremely dangerous, especially when it takes an hour and a half to get to your destination. A responsible employer wouldn't require you to travel in this kind of weather.

Boss just called, not only can I stay home tomorrow, if something *does* happen and someone needs to drive in, he volunteered to do it.

Ok, I take back all the mean thoughts (and words) about him. :D

*thinks she'll make a snowman tomorrow

Oh, and something that was really cool... My next door neighbor who we befriended this past summer cleared my sidewalk with his snowblower. How cool is that?
