Linux switch? It's time!

Well, it's time to go Full Time Linux.
They've come full circle.
They now have every app I need.

Full compatibility with the latest MS Office apps...All
Form fillers (roboform, and Lastpass) are both good
PDFEdit, for ...editing PDF files..latest format supported.
DVD ripping, and burning.
Kompozer WYSIWYG web editor.
FTP manager, and D/L managers

OS speed, and older comp compatibility, and even with the newest core.

and just um, Everything. It's There!:TU:

I like PCLinuxOS with the LXDE desktop.
 
Congrats, once you're past the learning curve, Linux becomes THE working environment benchmark.
 
not really much of a curve now it doesn't seem.
At least not really more than jumping from winXP to win7.

If I did gaming, it might be different, but for office type stuff,
it's ready.

The development in the last year or 2 has been phenomenal.
 
I only played with linux twice maybe back in ~01-03, my tolerance was short lived.

I admit I'm curious about *nix but as far as I know it won't run my more important programs like my NLE's (Non-Linear-Editing) etc.

There are a few broadcast NLE's that are made for *nixy's but the prices are in the $10k+ range.
 
I'm lazy & time-limited.

Does the user still need to maually install instead of running a simple .exe? I'd be ok learing to do that shit after I had the machine up & running for daily use.

it might run it, or have a comparable program.
I was checking out a new 3d modeling proggy last night, and I ran across
a program that was described as like a Photoshop for video.
I don't remember the name but I'll look it back up.

Anyone who made any program for Nixy that is in the $10K+ range is insane. Nixy doesn't buy programs that expensive...and Nixy runs a mac anyway. ;)

Ok, done talking about myself in the third person now...it even annoys ME.

I can't afford to play with "might work", I've have waaay to much riding on what I'm doing. Not only in time but I have a few bucks invested in it too.

Heh! ;) .....but if Nixy had several millions in hardware and multiple satellite up-feeds she might dole out 10k for a little happy-appy.

Or she might just sell it all and happily retire by 35.
 
Oh yeah cat. The university also provides me with considerable contribution of software and resources for our project.

While I carry curiousty for *nix I can't spend my time or energy with it right now. Once we get past certain objectives I will have both time and hardware to play with. Until then I have to keep a tight focus and avoid to many distraction.
 
oh btw,...
I haven't installed it on my main rig...yet.
I've just run the live distos on it.

I have it installed on an old Piii-800mhz w/512mb memory,
and an old 30gig HD.
Dual boot with windows ME. :D
 
I've still got parts for a few old rigs for the P2-p3 class. I even have several of the classic celly 300A's, never used. I really can't afford to start playing with them, time or otherwise. It always ends badly ;)

In due time we expect to build a full function studio. Right now we are working with an absolute minimum, which is still quite a bit. <---- This is my personal pay-off, more toys.

well, I just found out that the new versions of lastpass, ans roboform both
use "online" storage.
I don't like that they no longer offer a stand-alone version. :(
I guess I'll go back to the old way, and work at it a little harder.

It seem the more 'convenient' something is, the more you have to think about security.
Watch out.
 
For a laptop, which screen size should you use the "netbook edition" versus using the "desktop edition" of ubunto?
 
Luis may be on in a while....He may have a little more experience with ubuntu.

I'd say...how good is your eyesight. Those screens are fairly small.
Not like an iphone though.

A 17.3" screen should suffice for the desktop edition?
 
Oh, I thought you were getting an actual netbook 'machine'.

with a 17, I'd say 1024x768 would be standard.
If it's a wide screen style I'm not sure on the with, but something around 768 on height.
Maybe 12xx on the width.
 
Yeah, for a 17" 4:3 1280x1024 is pretty much the standard and for 17" 16:9 1920x1080 (sometimes 1920x1200), and you should install the desktop edition.
