I remember back when they used to tell you to pour a bunch of salt into a bowl and then stick the jar into the salt upside down so that the salt will fall into the threading grooves. Its supposedly a great way to grease it open. Frankly, I think it to be time consuming and a waste of a lot of salt. I also feared that the salt would get into the food and contaminate what you're working with. One would also have to wash ones hands, as well as the jar afterwards. A wee bit overcomplicated methinks.
