Nuclear weapons are GOOD

I think it all boils down to one word. Racism. Germans look an awful lot like us, Japanese don't.

Now, you can say the bomb wasn't ready for Germany but that's crap, it was ready for most of the war, they just didn't want to have to use it. I think the decision was made for two reasons, one, racism, and two, that Japan is an island, and if it fucked up the whole island, no big loss, where if it fucked up Germany, the center of Europe would be toast for the next few thousand years.

I think that it goes beyond that. We weren't sure if Germany didn't have their own bombs. Oppenheimer was a german scientist after all. If his technology had been copied and followed-through on, then the Nazis might very well have had the bomb and been able to use it.

I doubt that 'fallout' was the issue...the bomb was fairly new and they didn't know the full extent of the after-effects of such a bomb.

Racism...that I can understand, but Nazi horrors trumps racism IMHO.

I havn't read the historicals on those, but I somehow doubt that they'd have supported Nazi Germany if they'd known about the million deaths, or the ovens etc... Expansionism has been looked over on numerous occasions, support for an up and coming super-power would;ve been the intelligent thing to do, until you realized their methodology. Ford et al pulled their support...

Simple arithmetic, PT. They used it almost as soon as it was ready. Truman tried to warn the Japanese of what was coming first. If they would have had it in time they would almost certainly have nuked Berlin.

Not to say that racism didn't play it's part, but the simple fact is that the Japanese military showed time and again that they would refuse to surrender under any circumstances. This coupled with the ambiguity of the intelligence coming from Japan and the possibility of another year or more of a war that every American was exhausted from led Truman to his decision. It's easy to look back and find fault with what someone has done. None of us was there. From what I've read, I still believe he did what he felt he had to.
the center of Europe would be toast for the next few thousand years.
Note that Hiroshima and Nagasaki are not dangerous to live in and are thriving cities. Background radiation has returned to near normal levels.

Well, you see, the difference is that these are verifiable facts rather than thinly disguised right-wing rhetoric...

Right wing rhetoric = TRUTH.

Some of us just spin it to make better conversation.
