Raising the speed limit...

This morning on the way to work I pulled up behind a woman in a Monte Carlo. The light turns green, and I see her with both hands up on the back of her head, looking like she's putting her hair in a pony tail. She drives this way for two blocks before the road starts to curve. No, we don't have shitty drivers out there.

Damned straigtht. I've been trying to wean my wife of the habit for twelve years.

Hows that working out, you ask?
Not too well.

Have the police 'wean' her by removing her license for a bit. Point is...if eating/talking/listening to music/etc is more important than driving, she shouldn't be behind the wheel. Tell I said so. :p

wimp :D

She was just testing the front end alignment. If she can drive for two blocks without the car pulling to either side, her alignment's fine. :)

And if she had an accident, it would've been somebody elses fault. Perhaps yours because you didn't have the decency to honk your horn, scaring her into actually driving.

Unfortunately, it's not against the law. Note that she doesn't do it when I'm in the car, but when I clean the car there are always coke cans and chip bags in it.

Reckless driving is legal in your state? :alienhuh: You do know that eating/drinking/makeup/shaving/cell-phones/etc. can be prosecuted under reckless driving statutes (the driver was being inattentive), don't you? ;)

Really? I thought they had to be driving in a reckless manner for the officer to have probable cause. I do have to admit that when there is traffic, she puts it away, and she doesn't let it interfere with her staying in one lane, driving straigh, etc. Oh, and at least she uses her signals, which makes her part of a very small minority here in TN, where the watchword is "Turn signals are a courtesy, not the law."

I should also point out that when she is concentrating strictly on driving she is very good.

Really, now...Are you sure she's not looking over your shoulder as you respond? ;)

Seriously, though, any activity that takes attention away from your driving can be considered reckless. It's just that most cops don't push the issue unless you're swerving, etc. They use it as an 'icing on the cake' charge when they catch you for something else...

If you want drivers to be more safe, get rid of seatbelts, airbage, and collapsible steering columns. Once you're done with that, narrow the lanes on the roads by 3 feet. It's been proven that 'unsafe' conditions make safer drivers... Human nature and self-preservation at it's best...

I actually think raising the speed limit to 130 miles per hour on interstates where there are for at least 1 mile along them no hills, intersecting driveways/roads, and/or curves and if there are shoulders would be a good idea and to keep the minimum 40 miles per hour speed limit would be good idea too but keep current maximum speed limits at intersections. I also think people should abide by the three second rule whereas drivers stay at least 3 seconds behind the vehicle they're driving behind (they're not any closer than 3 seconds in reference to an object). It's been discovered that most accidents are done at lower speeds than higher speeds.

The problem is not every driver is mentally and not every vehicle is physically qualified to go fast.

Distance divided by speed times 60 (minutes) equals the time it takes to get there:

100 mi. / 70 mph x 60 = 85.714

100 mi/ 75mph x 60 = 80.0

You'll get there 6 minutes faster...

The faster you go the harder you hit...

In my state the limit's 75 mph on the 4-lane interstate I80 (2 lanes on each side of the grassy median--not even a retaining wall to keep the oncoming from crossing over and hitting you--and there's nothing more startling than seeing a E bound State Patrol car dive into that grass and whip a U-turn and pop up on the W bound side...). The left lane moves along at about 85 mph. But if you drive the right lane you come upon people driving 65 mph. The legal minimum on this road is 40 mph, and some semis and campers and nomads in fumey old beaters, their left turnsig endlessly winking, the backseat filled to the roof with junk, actually try it. Talk about your road hazards. Fortunately they're adding some lanes over the next few years, but the road is already filling in with many vehicles.
