Russians suppying Iraq

I worry more about those 'lost' suitcase nukes that Russia can't seem to find anymore since the split-up of the good ol' USSR.

I'd bet that Saddam would've given over a few million$$ to whoever brought in one of those puppies.

:confuse3: RD, The stuff they're doing gives Iraq the ability to jam guidance systems. It could result in American deaths and, on a lesser note, cause our weapons to hit other countries. THAT would create quite a problem....

Hex, the government was asked to intervene and has ignored our requests. I don't like the idea of having to deal with them during all of this. Even if it only becomes a cold war again, its not good at all....

Am I the only one who's spotted the US's silver lining? The Iraqis have GPS jammers. The Americans have GPS guided bombs. If a bomb slams into a school, who's fault is it? That's right. The bomb was dead on track until it was knocked off course by the Iraqi GPS jammer. Instant freebie. It's a Get out of Jail Free card.

Russian President Vladimir Putin denied US allegations that Russian firms had sold military equipment to Iraq, in a telephone conversation with his US counterpart George W. Bush, the Kremlin said.

Putin reminded Bush in the conversation on Monday that Moscow has previously released information proving that such sales have never occurred, the president's press secretary Alexei Gromov said, according to the Interfax news agency.

The Russian leader said Washington had failed to provide proof to back its allegations, and that could only damage bilateral relations, Gromov said.

The White House said Monday it had "credible evidence" that Russian companies sold Iraq night-vision goggles, anti-tank weapons, and technology to jam satellite signals that US-led forces could use to guide bombs and military aircraft.

It said in their telephone conversation Bush scolded Putin over the alleged sales.

In a statement on Monday about the conversation the Kremlin had made no mention of the escalating row over the US accusations. It said only: "Both heads of state also discussed a range of current issues in bilateral relations."

I'm not sure if defense mechanisms were outlawed or not. I was thinking it was only the WMD's and long range missles that were outlawed.

I don't think these are against the UN sanctions for Iraq to "have" ,but may be a no-no to provide/sell to Iraq.

Well, I've got to say that in this instance, I can't really come down on the Iraqi's. What harm were they really seeking here? Did they [/i]know[/i] that this whole thing was going to come down to an invasion? Highly doubt it. How long have they had that equipment anyway?

Like every other country out there, they were investing in equipment to better equip their troops to defend their country. Just like we do, and the Russians do (although I won't laugh to hard to the T-80 tank), the French (not sure if they even know how to protect their troops though), the Germans and any other country out there. These aren't weapons of mass destruction. It's a pair of thermal night vision goggles and some jamming equipment. If we hadn't invaded, this would be a moot point now wouldn't it? I think we're digging rather deep here for something to blame on them.

Now, before you start jumping all over me on this. Think about it first. If we hadn't invaded, would this really be that big of a deal?? Hell, I doubt anyone here would even know about it in the first place.

I do want to make it clear that the sell of military equipment without the consent of the government of that country is not something I would like to see nor do I condone. Russia has some pretty deadly shit in their arsenal. Trust me. I got the privilege of experiencing it. That can't make a tank worth a shit, but they can make an anti-tank missile that'll ruin your whole fucking day.

I'm with Posty on this, I just don't see the real harm here. The least we can do is to allow them to fight fair.

That hardly makes it fair PT....Cripes, we hit them with over a billion dollars worth of cruise missles in one night.... All they had was a half dozen backyard scuds to fight back with.

Its Russia we need to watch. They were in violation of the UN resolution and thats what started this shit in the first place.

Well, ok, maybe not Fair exactly, but at least give the poor guys an ice cubes chance in hell.

with garbage it turns out. One of the Generals said they've destroyed the GPS jammers, one using a GPS guided JDAM :D

"Actually we've been able to identify the location of each of those jammers and I'm happy to report that we have destroyed all six of those jammers in the last two nights' air strikes."

"I am also pleased to say they had no effect on us. In fact we destroyed one of the jammers with a GPS weapon."

Story

The radio said last night that they acted as homing beacons when turned on.

Best thing they have is a T72, which is what we encountered. I've been inside both though and with either one, I was pretty unimpressed with them.
