Ugh.. I have just heard the saddest song in human history.

Sgt. MacKenzie by Joseph Kilna MacKenzie

It was written as a battle-weary lamenting dirge for WW1 soldiers. Its the musical equivalent of a Scottish wake and makes Waltzing Matilda sound like Happy Birthday in comparison.

Click the 'music' subfield on the left. In there is a link on the page for a 50 second sample of the song in voice only. The soundtrack for We Were Soldiers has it with fifes and bagpipes... eerily sad and makes the hair stand up on my neck.

Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone,
Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Whaur before many more have gone.

When they come I will stand my ground,
Stand my ground I'll not be afraid.

Thoughts of home take away my fear,
Sweat and blood hide my veil of tears.

Once a year say a prayer for me,
Close your eyes and remember me.

Never more shall I see the sun,
For I fell to a Germans gun.

Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone.
Lay me down in the cold cold ground,
Where before many more have gone.

Where before many more have gone.

Coldplay - Amsterdam

Come on, oh my star is fading
And I swerve out of control
And if I, if I'd only waited
I'd not be stuck here in this hole.

Come here, oh my star is fading
And I swerve out of control
And I swear I waited and waited,
I've got to get out of this hole

But time is on your side
It's on your side now
Not pushing you down and all around
It's no cause for concern

Come on, oh my star is fading
And I see no chance of release
I know I'm dead on the surface
But I'm screaming underneath

And time is on your side
It's on your side now
Not pushing you down and all around
It's no cause for concern

Stuck on the end of this ball and chain
And I'm on my way back down again
Stood on a bridge, tied to a noose
Sick to the stomach
You can say what you mean
But it won't change a thing
I'm sick of the secrets

Stood on the edge
Tied to a noose
You came along
And you cut me loose

You came along
And you cut me loose
You came along
And you cut me loose

I heard that when I saw "We Were Soldiers". Sad song.

"Bang Bang" from Kill Bill made me sad.

Also:

Only God Knows Why - Kid Rock

That song was played at my cousin's funeral. He committed suicide, and every time I hear the song, it makes me cry. The lyrics describe my cousin's life almost to a T.

Also:

Everybody Hurts - R.E.M.

Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) - Green Day

We don't have that song played at every prom here, to my knowledge anyway. It's played at every graduation ceremony.

Also:

Atmosphere - Joy Division
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
Zombie - The Cranberries
Hello - Evanescence
Love Hurts - Nazareth

I haven't listened to some of my music so I don't remember how sad any of it is. Otherwise I might have a longer list. Originally I was only going to say "Only God Knows Why" because it's the only song that makes me cry. But given the circumstances, I suppose it could make anyone cry.

The lyrics of the songs I chose aren't necessarily sad, but they bring a certain nostalgia & all of them have very personal connotations for me.

Good Riddance (Time of your life) - Greenday
Behind the Wall - Tracy Chapman
Me and a Gun - Tori Amos
Emotionless - Good Charlotte
Halleluja - Jeff Buckley
Songbird - Oasis
Sensitive - Jewel
Danny Boy (by any artist)
Mother - Pink Floyd
Last Day of our Acquiantance - Sinead O' Connor
Mad World - Tears for Fears (the acoustic version)
Lucky Man - The Verve
Gone 'til November - Wycleff Jean
Not an addict - K's Choice
The Unforgiven - Metallica
Nothing Else Matters - Metallica
For Whom the Bell Tolls - Metallica
Julie - Levellers (Oz, gotta agree there hun)

I was going to say "Unforgiven" by Metallica, but I forgot.

Also, "Don't Take the Girl" by Tim McGraw. I never really payed attention to those lyrics until now. And yes, I thought it was pretty sad.

I forgot a few:

Send in the Clowns - Judy Collins
Creep - Radiohead
Stole - Kelly Rowland
Colorblind - Counting Crows
Hurt - NIN
The Freshmen - The Verve Pipe
Wonderul - Everclear
Angel - Sarah McGlahlin
The Kids - Lou Reed
Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton

PC - Unforgiven always hits me in the gut. Damned powerful song.

Am I misinterpreting this song, or is it about her husband being terminally ill and close to death?

Sarah McLachlan - "Hold On"

Hold on
Hold on to yourself
for this is gonna hurt like hell

Hold on
Hold on to yourself
you know that only time will tell

What is it in me that refuses to believe
this isn't easier than the real thing
My love
you know that you're my best friend
you know I'd do anything for you
my love

let nothing come between us
my love for you is strong and true
Am I in heaven here or am I...
at the crossroads I am standing

So now you're sleeping peaceful
I lie awake and pray
that you'll be strong tomorrow and we'll
see another day and we will praise it
and love the light that brings a smile
across your face

Oh God if you're out there won't you hear me
I know that we've never talked before
oh God the man I love is leaving
won't you take him when he comes to your door

Am I in heaven here or am I in hell
at the crossroads I am standing

So now you're sleeping peaceful
I lie awake and pray
that you'll be strong tomorrow and we'll
see another day and we will praise it
and love the light that brings a smile
across your face...

Hold on
hold on to yourself
for this is gonna hurt like hell
