Senator wants to destroy 90% of computers used on the internet

Overstress the cpu would only make the temp go up, no physicall dammage.

Even if they could make a software to destroy your puter, they'd have to make you to install it, but how the hell are they going to inforce that?

bunch of wankers

There are ways to install things silently. I think the main threat is Windows users, where such things can be done easily. What about all those Windows-based BIOS flashers? That'll fubar your board quick. Program the bios to write 1k 0's to the front of your drive, then have it lock up your computer so you will try restarting it (which triggers the payload). I'd imagine this is real easy to do now that BIOS's have "bootsectors" allowing you to flash without a bootable floppy.

As said before by others, its only a matter of time before it gets reverse engineered. Then it becomes useless. Make a software that requires a key, and you will find a keygen. ;)

I don't think destruction of personal property under suspicion will hold up when it comes to pass the law. It'd be like a police officer smashing into your car because he thinks you're smoking crack.

if such a ridiculous idea were proposed it would invoke the same response that Berman's proposal did last year. it's all bullshit posturing by an ignoramus that happens to be a senator who sold his soul to the RIAA.

That's not what i had in mind when i read the word "destroy", probably the term "delete user data" would fit better ;)

Eh, destroy/delete....its all the same to a pissed off consumer ;)

To most users, to delete their files or corrupt their os is the same thing as destroying the computer. To me, and most of us here, it just means a reformat and reinstall. We are not the average computer users here.

Exactly. I learned long ago that the data which is on my computer, WILL disappear, so never leave it on there. I save early, often, and elsewhere. :headbang: Plus, if you were to get me, you'd only be deleting the song I'm downloading. Everything else is on a different computer. Won't stop me, just slows me down! :p

You know, I've always thought that society continues to evolve. The intelligent deal with it, the morons piss and moan.

Hmmm...
