Smoking...

Last I checked, smoking was still legal.

They're working on that.

Smoking is a necessity. It's for the children.

Absolutely. If the militants ever shut up long enough to sit down and calculate what all is paid for out of tobacco taxes, they'd stay shut up. Because if people stop, that money's gotta be raised from another pool of taxpayers...maybe a tax on curbed sidewalks or speed bumps in gated communities. I'd vote for that quicker than a cat can lick it's ass.

I've raised tobacco all through my childhood and through my mid-teens. If it hadn't been for that money we wouldn't have had a Christmas, or school clothes, or a lot of things we had. I bought my first car (at age 11) and paid for the restoration of it by working in tobacco fields. Ours, our neighbors, anyone I could find needing help. I don't need some spoiled-assed subdivision dweller telling me a damn thing. I've been on both sides of the economics of tobacco. I've yet to smoke a cigarette and as a result crash my car into a family of four.

But hey, more government intervention into private affairs is the American way, right?

IMO this is prime e.g. of why our Major problems can't get fixed....misdirection,
and screwed up priorities.

*makes another prediction....

smoking rate will rise amid the growing depression.

If you notice, as tobacco use declined, the obesity rate increased...and guess what they're starting to rail against now? :devious:

Interesting. I wonder how long this will go before some non-smoking whiner challenges even that law.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The clock is ticking down on Pennsylvania smokers who want to light up in many public spaces. A statewide smoking ban goes into effect in less than two weeks _ 90 days after it was signed by Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell.

The measure bans cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking in restaurants, office buildings, schools, sports arenas, theaters and bus and train stations.

However, it allows smoking in some bars and taverns, portions of casino floors, private clubs and elsewhere.

Feh...they've banned it in all bars, taverns, restaurants, clubs (private or not), parks, lineups for busses and within 9 meters of any businesses' door up here...and they want to ban it further!

I'll give it 2 weeks, Gato

Our Governor, Sonny Perdue, has instituted a cigarette ban in all buildings- except your own home- that's next! Personally, I've decided to give up tobacco and take up opium. All our money is going overseas, anyway- might as well support the Commie Chinese and the Taliban. Go to Hell, Sonny!

You do realize that smoking is just the 'grown up' method of sucking your thumb, doncha? Time to grow up and put on the big boy pants, Gato.

If you want to have some real fun, the next time one of these smoking Nazis is on a radio talk show call in and ask the following question:

"During the Great Depression Americans could not afford cigarettes so they took up smoking cornsilk. What steps will you take if kids rediscover cornsilk as a tobacco substitute; outlaw minors in possession of unshucked corn?"

The silence will be hilarious. They don't know what to say. I did have one tell me that I was doing a disservice to children by spreading this fact.

That would be an idiotic and pointless thing to say.
