That's enough. Time to ban

all box-cutters from the general public. Too many have died from their use, and the only way to protect society from box-cutter wielding maniacs is to ban them. And they were used in a school.

*sigh* point please.

are you knocking what you feel are the same reasons they have gun laws?

Oh, box cutter in a school? your right they should be banned to all but people who are cutting the boxes in the school (hence kids dont' have em)

Um, no. Ban boxcutters? May as well ban guns. Boxcutters don't kill people. People kill people.

*holds on to her lil' box cutter that she's had for the past five years* The attack referenced in the fox article could have easily been done with scissors, exacto knife, or even a sharp ruler ...

Let's see...child brings gun to school (even a blatant toy), and there's a loud public outcry over guns. This story was buried. Can you say hypocrisy? That was my point. No matter what people do or say, we'll find ways to do ourselves in. If you read further, you'd also see a beheading. No guns involved, so it's the last paragraph...

Let's see...So many things I could say, but read my response to p_v's quote. If you look further at his response, you'll see how he states that

Funny thing, though...this attack happened in Japan. The one country held up as a bastion of non-violence because of their extremely strict gun laws.

yep.

I have a real issue with sharp things that can be used as weapons, I really really.

I remember in my school when I was very young the toys you brought in for lunch or whatever had to have no sharp edges, what is wrong with that?

Why should kids in school have a box cutter? For what reason? yes other schools stuff can be used as a weapon, no they shouldn't ban those, but a box cutter is not necessary, so say to the kids leave em at home, simple.

It was buried, so is a lot of other stories, yes gun violence always gets front page.

So, do we ban sissors next?
Apparently so.

I'm a bit confused, Gato. Are you being sarcastic about calling for a ban on box cutters? Or are you calling for a ban on box cutters in school? Or are you calling for better news stories posting what's important and not getting buried? :s

Just pointing out hypocrisy. Every time there's a school shooting, people want to ban guns, and are led by the nose because of front-page pictures. Here we have a student who is sliced up with a box-cutter, and bleeds to death, and the story is buried. Not only that, but my motives for posting the story are questioned. Scarcasm aside, for which I have only myself to blame, the hypocrisy is plain to see. Where's the outrage? Hell...box-cutters were used to take over the planes on 9/11...

Correct, but they were still used...and there was no call for a general ban.

When I was in high school, all knives including box cutters, and razors were ban.
Did they un-ban um?
and
the only scissors we could have were about 5" long.

In school in north central Iowa we could carry pocket knives. If you got caught with open you'd get it taken away, but it was ok to have one on your belt.

Because back in them days, we were expected to be responsible...

Aye, "them" days was nearly 20 years ago now. One of my kids even took a pocket knife to school they'd be facing a 10 day suspension and law enforcement will get involved. Don't ask how I know.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned here is that chances are, there were rules at that school against a student having a box-cutter. But if this student has murder on her mind, I don't think a little rule against carrying a box-cutter at school would have had any chance of stopping her. This is the same reason school shootings happen even though guns have been banned at school for ages.

"Make it a crime to have a box-cutter, and only criminals will have them."

As an aside, I carried my Swiss Army knife in my picket in high school. I probably could have been expelled for it, but since I stayed out of trouble at school they never searched me. This was in 1999, though, and I don't know if I could get away with it in high school today.

If they don't expect it from the adults, how can they expect it from the kids?

Kids in here can not have pointy scissors and they are sharp enough to cut paper but not to cut yourself.

That rule seems to relax as time passes, elementary 6th grade students sometimes had cutters

It is my opinion that cutters should be forbidden in schools, there's no need for them unless you're studying drawing.

Back when I was in school, it was common to see trucks with gun-racks in the back...complete with 30-06 rifles...during deer season. As for your 'cutters' being allowed for drawing class, those were, and should be, supplied by the school, and collected after class. Just like scalpels in biology class...

i think the problem here is the child... not the implement... you could kill a fellow student with a well placed blow to the back of the neck with a history book... i'm not too keen on guns 'cause they can kill from such a distance and can take down many people in a very short period of time
