Canada's trying to be European. Canada has been aping trends in Europe, from the obsession with multiculturalism to the rising contempt for religion, greater censorship, and even a declining birthrate. Canada's birthrate is 1.49 children per woman, well below the replacement level of 2.1. Canada's elites behave much like those of the United States, favoring judicially imposed decisions over democratic and legislative ones. In Canada, a smaller and less varied nation than the United States, the elites meet less resistance. But there are signs of a pushback. Though the Canadian and American press consistently give the impression that gay marriage is overwhelmingly favored in Canada, a February 2 National Post /Global National poll found that two thirds of Canadians oppose gay marriage and would most likely vote against it in a national plebiscite. The polls suggest that Canadians are close to Americans on this issue. It's elite opinion and judges that make Canada look different.

Multiculturism is bad?
Organised religion is good?
The USA has less censorship?
Gay marriage is bad?
I don't think I could come to a common consensus with a person that thought like that
I never understand how rabble-rousing young male Canadians get over the war of 1812. They thump their chests and act like they did it all solo. It was a British war. Canada supplied some men and safe harbors for the British professional troops and its massive industrail backbone.K62 said:pfft,
Hey! Lets not forget who won the war of 1812!

If you don't read/write/speak English, you'e better learn. In the US, government forms must be printed in several languages. English, Spanish, French, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Japanese...and the people who speak/read/write these languages are not forced to learn the language of the majority.

High level documents... yes.. will be initially written in English... but other language copies will be available to all... as is the case in America.

Nope, All our forms are mutilingual. It is a different scenario though, we are afterall an indigenous race. This makes multiculturism and intergration more of an issue then it would be in America.
religion is good because that's the way our constitution was written. Freedom of religion.
Fair enough, horses for courses as you might say. I think religion should be personal though and your religous ideals should be kept to yourself. Many Christaians agree and there is a very good book by Brian Mawhinney (ex - British politician) that discusses this.

Get an Oxford English dictionary. We spell alot of words with S instead of Z . This is because we don't have a strong slavic influence on our English.
Censorship is a little tougher to pin down, because not too many folks will agree on what censorship really means. Lewd and lacivious conduct, rough language, and sex are 'censored' from over-the-air television, but allowed on pay-channels. Free exchanges of ideas are allowed (like this one on this forum), but yelling fire in a crowded theater can get you locked up. Most people who claim they are being censored are actually not being censored at all, as censorship is by the government, and not an individual/group/company you happen to work for, or associate with.
It seems in resurgence here, we had two incidents;
Play censored - religion

Most US citizens have a problem with gay marriage. I'd prefer that it be called a 'Civil Union', myself, but this isn't about what I think.
I really don't get the problem. People should be given the same rights under law when married, be they same sex or not. Call it something different if you want.
So they have a strong tendency to suppress speech that they see as lacking in niceness.

The US was barely 30 years old ... still in the pram.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
I never did get it why we're not allowed, as Canadians, to be proud of our country.K62 said:
