This is getting out of hand

(CNN) -- Seoul says it will go ahead with its plan to deploy thousands of troops to Iraq despite a televised threat from militants to behead a South Korean hostage.

In a video broadcast Sunday on Arabic-language television network Al-Jazeera, the hostage -- identified by South Korean officials as Kim Sun-il -- cries in English, "Please get out of here. I don't want to die ... Your life is important, but my life is important."

Masked militants in the video threatened to behead Kim in 24 hours -- a deadline that expires Monday -- unless South Korea quit the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq.

saw it on tv...not a very pleasant sight, that's for sure.
i'm pretty sure the militants will keep their word, unfortunately. i can't even imagine how the guys family must feel at the moment.

for the greater good, without doubt. but then arises the question, how much is the life of one men worth?

a sad, sad world :(

Truly horrible, another captive-human slaughter for the world to see at the hands of villainy.

From a clinical, less personal view: If his message is to his fellow countrymen of South Korea, why is he speaking in strained engrish?

Why not speak in his native tongue where he can capture and relate his emotional pain and fear to his own people?

Could the target audience be the engrish speaking anti-war seditionist crowd?

I again say; there are those in this country that have blood on their hands.

Or maybe it's because English is the Lingua Franca, so they've taken the time to learn it and not Korean.

Ummm...It was the Korean hostage who was talking, not the terrorists.

As long as Roh Moo-hyun keeps his head & doesn't become Spain, this will begin losing it's effectiveness. Should they panic & go the way of Spain, it will increase the number of beheadings.

Looks like S.Korea isn't going to back down any. linkLooks like South Korea will have its hands full for a while. America is pulling it's troops out of there, so their more open to invasion. South Korea is planning on helping out their northern neighbours with oil in excahnge for a Nuclear freeze. And they're sending 3000 troops to Iraq.

Very busy place right now. Lots of pissed off people..like this young lady below (the sister of the slain man)

Sadly, she & the rest of the family blamed their own government instead of the terrorists for his death. A BBC story I'm too lazy to go get.

But mixed with sorrow, the couple battled with feelings of betrayal by a government which pledged to do its best to free Kim and ultimately failed.
If the GVT was stupid enough to say that they'll try their best to free someone, knowing full well that they don't have troops in the area to even do sweeps with and/or have no intention/power to free prisoners..then they deserve the blame.

I beg to differ. They did try their best. Within the scope of not giving in to terrorists. That the terrorists were completely unwilling to negotiate ....

Terrorists don't negotiate. They demand and act if their demands aren't met.
If the GVT had said that they don't negotiate with terrorists and that asking for their son to be looked for was 'the best they could do' then the family would've blamed the terrorists. Promissing to try when you know that your hands are tied behind your back is pandering to the family..and not all that useful.

Exactly.

And if you believe that...

The family, in pain, is willing to blame anyone tangible right now. They know who their own leaders are, but not the terrorist fucks who killed their son. Their own gov't is identifyable, and is thus the current target for that pain and anger. Wouldn't matter WTF the gov't had said.

BTW, the SK gov't DID do the best they could. No broken promise that I can see.

Would it have been better for the SK Gov't official to bow, & offer a weak apology that includes some variation of the words "he's fucked"?

not a lot more that the SK government could have done. the terrorists were not open to negotiate at all, which ultimately cost the life of this man.

Wow Shadow
your post was a hummdinger!
at first glance I thought you were advocating that the SK's should have negotiated, I thought ? that's nutty! So I rescanned the passage (scan generated in .052 Sec.)
and got the full import of the ludicrous concept you were conveying!
Terr: We want all the SK troops to go home!
SK: No
Terr: Um how about half?
SK: No
Terr: Well what can we negotiate for this guy.
SK: How about YOUR life?
You release him unharmed or else.
Let me give you a little history lesson if you don't back off when our troops get there you are toast!
Our American allies looked the other way once
and have promised to do it again!
This isn’t patty cake Mohammed, this is war!

i think you should re-read my post again, since you clearly didn't get my point anyway.
the terrorists weren't open to any negotiations, so there wasn't a lot more they could do in the first place...

which is my point exactly.
