U.S. Gasoline Prices Hit a Record High

CAMARILLO, Calif. - Prices for all grades of gasoline rose 1.34 cents in the last two weeks to a record high nationwide average of $1.77 a gallon, according to a study released Sunday.

Gas prices have jumped by nearly 26 cents so far this year, and while they won't be falling by that amount any time soon, they aren't expected to rise much higher, according to the Lundberg survey of 8,000 stations nationwide. The survey was conducted Friday.

The previous combined average record high was $1.76 in May 2001.

Analyst Trilby Lundberg said the latest spike reflects the rise in crude oil prices and an increase in refinery work to prepare for greater spring and summer gasoline demand.

OPEC declared earlier this year that it would reduce official oil production by April 1 and crack down on those countries exceeding the level.

"Where crude oil prices go next _ whether they push or pull on gas prices _ is OPEC's guess," she said.

Lundberg said work at the refineries is nearly complete.

"The pace of the pump price hike has slowed and prices are dropping on a spotty basis around the country," she said.

In California, prices remain higher than the rest of the country due to the state's strict environmental regulations and sales tax on gas pumps. Still, pump prices dropped nearly a penny in the last two weeks to $2.10 per gallon.

The national weighted average price of gasoline, including taxes, at self-serve pumps Friday was about $1.74 for regular, $1.84 for midgrade and $1.92 for premium.

I've seen a six- to 10-cent drop around here in the last week or two. Where are the $3-per-gallon prices we were supposed to see?

I'm not. But given that when prices were heading upwards at first I was hearing the $3-word being tossed about, then prices stabilised for a week or so and then started to head down, I'm not inclined to think they'll hit $3.

Keep in mind that the reason I heard the $3-word is because I live in California.

I hope they get to around $3.00 per gallon nationwide...just to watch those idiots buying SUV's crying at the pump... :devious:

Told us so?

You said it was a war for oil, as I recall, but did you say it was a war for higher gas prices?

Ours is fluctuating between $1.60 & $1.80 (weekend spikes).

If I understand how this works, we take over Iraq, steal all their oil, leave them constitutional-less & run away at our convenience or Kerry's election, whicever comes first. So far none of that has happened.

The increase in gas prices was a foregone conclusion. I didn't really think it needed to be stated in so many words. Ours is about where your's is Gonz. I don't think it'll get to three this year, but it's going to get to well above two. As for the rest, wait for it.

Those of you who are 'well-to-do', look alive. The market on SUV's is about to burst. Sell now, before the prices drop...

If I could get rid of my burb, I would. But how else am I supposed to haul six kids and the wife around?

And this is in American dollars, mind you. $2.39 isn't so bad anymore.

Sure...for Americans travelling to Canada, our prices don't seem that high because of the currency exchange...but consider this...for us living living, it's still $3.19/gallon.

We can't take the exchange into effect...it's not like we get paid our salaries in US$ or enything. In fact...when you consider it all...cost of living and our salaries, US vs. CAN are about the same...but you get paid in US$. We're getting screwed more at the tank.
