The U.S. House of Representatives have passed a motion to favor the usage of domestic steel in public U.S. projects. This type of protectionism is set to cause serious harm to the Canadian Steel industry. Some estimates say this could cause a 40% decrease in Canadian jobs in the Steel industry. Prime Minster Stephan Harper told Parliament this is a “serious matter, a serious concern to us. I spoke to our ambassador about it,” Canadian International Trade Minster Stockwell Day commented “the U.S. has very clear legal obligations under both [the] North American Free Trade Agreement and the World Trade Organization, and Canada expects the U.S. to live up to them.”

U.S. President Obama will make his first official foreign visit to Ottawa on Feb 19, 2009, where Canadian PM Stephan Harper should address this serious problem.

Canada has had similar problems with illegal U.S. policies concerning trade, such as with U.S. Canadian lumber disputes where international bodies have favored in Canada’s position.

More protectionist BS.

Meet the new boss' advisers, same as the old boss' advisers.

I say we nullify all trade agreements.

Russia might pay more for out oil, and now we can refine it ourselves, we can stop exporting live beef for US slaughterhouses to take care of, and sell back to us. NY can pay 3 times as much for electricity.

We do not need the USA.

CAN-A-DA!
CAN-A-DA!
CAN-A-DA!

CAN-A...what do you mean they're invading? Now? We're Socialists? Practically communists? Of course we have oil, but...

I was labeled an isolationist, and protectionist years ago, so y'all know
how I feel there.

That said, I certainly do see a need for the right/fair kind of trade.

Don't get me wrong...there's nothing wrong with buying American first for you guys..including your infamous bailout plan. Hell, I try to buy Canadian as often as possible.

But a trade agreement cuts both ways and aids both partners. When one walks out, both suffer..as mentioned by Paul.

IMO, as far as I know, Canada trade with the US is mostly good.
Like everywhere though there's the bad apples.

Y'all may have us beat now in industrial growth I guess.

I think they're trying to figure out a way to ...
(a) save US jobs and
(b) encourage companies in the US to stay in the US.

Many of our manufacturing has been packed up here and sent overseas where it used to be cheaper to manufacture. However, companies are finding that this is not necessarily the case and that you can do it just as cheap in the US.

This beings said, I think the intent of the steel jab was not aimed Canada, but Asia. Unfortunately, the bill would lump Canada in with any other foreign nation. Believe it or not, Canada is actually NOT one of the United States of America. (Shocking, I know!)

I swear Obama is surprising me.
I must be sick, or he actually is doing the right things mostly so far.

don't like the people he's picking though.

Lower corporate taxes & watch them return.
You will never get taxes so low that it offsets $1.50/hour (or less) salaries.

Besides, many cities have tempted companies with (a) tax incentives and (b) giving land away for their industrial use. Sometimes it works, but we still have companies sending their manufacturing overseas.

What we really need is to hit these companies in the pocket book. Disqualify these corporations from tax incentives or discounts that have ANY manufacturing performed overseas, even if they send their work to other companies overseas rather than doing it here themselves. Many of them put in orders to companies overseas (especially to China), ship the product here and slap their names on it for selling to the US customer.

We are a foreign nation...but we're a foreign nation with a strong free-trade agreement which works to the benefit of all involved.

The wording needs to be twigged a bit to protect that trade agreement and still push companies to try and stay local.

you hear about the new 300% tariff on roquefort cheese, as retaliation because the french - in a smart move - don't want hormone-treated beef from amerika? thanks for the parting gift mister bush. hopefully obama will reverse it.

Do you guys even get french cheese? I thought your variety was terribly limited because most good french cheeses are not pasteurized.
