[font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Nearly a year after a massive marijuana growing operation in a Barrie, Ont. brewery was uncovered police haven’t been able to nab the masterminds behind the illegal outfit. The two-year scheme produced thousands of plants and made millions of dollars but reportedly, only a few people will see any jail time.
On Friday seven men were handed their sentences ranging from five years in prison to two years of house arrest, they pleaded guilty to production and possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. But reportedly, police believe these men were only minor players in the massive setup that earned around $120 million. Until officials uncover new evidence, the men sentenced Friday will be the only ones to spend time behind bars after the pot plant bust. Reportedly, authorities know who the key players are but don't have the proof needed to back it up in court.
Police uncovered the outfit in the former Molson brewery - it was the largest grow-op in Canadian history. Authorities found a sophisticated setup that included living quarters for nearly 30 workers with a kitchen, a place to do their laundry and entertainment rooms. More than 20 enormous vats, previously used to brew suds, had been converted into hothouses rigged with complex irrigation and lighting systems for approximately 20,000 plants. And it was also a highly clandestine undertaking; it reportedly took police nearly an hour to find the grow-op once they were inside the building.
