VARCA: Extreme vegetarian practices among Indians can lead to hyperhomocysteinemia and high homocysteine levels resulting in diseases including strokes, heart attack, diabetes and other fatal diseases, experts have opined.

At the end of two-day long conference of Indian study group on homocystein at Varca in Goa, medical practitioners said homocysteine levels amongst Indian population was alarming and it is more amongst the "extreme vegetarians".

"We are not advocating that everyone should eat meat but milk, eggs or green salad can be consumed to make up for deficiency of B12, folic acid and pyridoxine," stated Dr Rusom wadia, pune-based consulting physician and neurologist.

Various medical professionals including Dr Wadia, Dr G S Sainani, cardiodiabetologist, Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai, Dr Pradip Talwalkar, consulting diabetologist, S L Raheja hospital, Mumbai, Dr Y P Munjal, Director, Centre for Diabetes and Lifestyle Diseases participated in the first ever such conference aimed to work out guidelines on awareness amongst general practitioners and masses about homocysteine level, which is a major risk factor.

"Prevalence of heart attack, diabetics and paralysis stroke has reached epidemic proportions in India. It has begun affecting 10 to 20 years younger population compared to the western world," noted Dr Talwalkar.

The experts participating in the conference revealed that different parts of country showed different homocystein levels "ideal level is five to 15 micromoles per litre but the lower the level is better," they stated. It was felt that besides advising for change in lifestyle, which includes giving up smoking, including eggs or milk or green salad in diet, regular exercises, one vitamin tablet a day can reduce the homocystein level and save Indian population from being susceptible to fatal diseases.

"What we are talking is just one risk factor for fatal diseases, there are various other factors. But taking care of one factor can reduce the diseases," the experts stated.

"What is most important is awareness about this aspect. There should be awareness amongst the population and also amongst the average medical practitioners so that the level can be checked or can be reduced with tablets without waiting for something drastic to happen," Dr Talwalkar added.

FACTS TO PONDER:

(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000

(B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000

(C) Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171.

Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept of Health Human Services.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Now think about this:

Guns:

(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000.

(Yes, that's 80 million..)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

(C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is

.000188

Statistics courtesy of the FBI

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

So, statistically, doctors are approximately

9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Remember, "Guns don't kill people, doctors do."

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN,

BUT

ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat.
We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!!!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Out of concern for the public at large,

We have withheld the statistics on

lawyers

for fear the shock would cause people to panic

and seek

medical attention

Well, der. We're omnivores - if you cut everything out, it ain't gonna be good fer ya.

*why yes, yes I'm vegetarian

<green> We vegetarians love the environment. carnivores are sick freaks.
<Frank> How can vegetarians possibly love the environment.. you keep eating all the fucking plants

So not eating meat can be harmful to your health. As bad as eating too much. Wow. Go figure.

If God didn't want us to eat animals He wouldn't have made them taste so good.

Meaning we eat anything. Veggiesaurs & meatasaurs died out. Herbivores & carnivores are lower on the food chain. EVERYTHING (let's not go to stupidities here) is good for you in moderation & balanced with everything else. Why is that so damned hard to understand?

Moderation - "You mean that I can't eat whatever I want when I want it? but but but...I'm on <insert popular BS diet here>!!!"

I'm sure that a great many people would be surprised to find out exactly how small a 'serving' of any food is...like chips. A serving of chips is 10 chips...not 1 bag.

You want to lose weight and be healthy? Buy smaller plates. Make sure that there's at least one item that's naturally green on it (yes, lettuce..cukes, broccoli etc...) and exercise.

and one that's naturally red, like steak & one that's naturally brown, like gravy & one that's naturally greasy, like tater tots & one that's naturally sweet, like ice cream & pie & cake and....

See, a well balanced meal.

People are stupid

i'm sure all those instances of shitty health among indian vegetarians have nothing to do with the absurb amounts of sweets and clarified butter in the indian diet.

*lousy fucking vegetarians*
