Been there, done that. It's irritating but the odds of someone, as you described, of shopifting are greater than some average Joe. 2 choices, live with it or quit looking "out of place".

Nah, there is a 3rd choice.........demand to see the store manager and ask for an explanation as to why you are being followed. That usually gets them off your arse. I had to do that in the local bookshop after the same halfwit followed me around every time I visited for a month.

Shame I don't have the time to do it in every shop with facist security tho' :eh:

When I was 16, I went to the Pharmacy for my mom. Bought laxatives, aspirin and tampons. While perusing the store, I debated on picking up a certain nail polish, but halfway through decided not to. So, like any normal person, I kinda put it on any random shelf. After paying, at the door, I was stopped and escorted in back, where my bag was searched, ostensibly to find the nail polish I stole. I denied stealing it, and snottily said "What, gonna do a strip seach?" to which the man replied "maybe". So, I was embarassingly escorted to where I had put the nail polish down, to prove I hadn't stolen it. At which point I was allowed to leave, after being reprimanded for not putting it back where I got it...

Now, had I not been sporting a platinum blond mohawk and a leather jacket at the time, would they have stopped me? I doubt it. Fair, naw. Happens? All the time. We look at everything and everyone we see and make instant judgements based on preconceptions and stereotypes, right at first glance.

Never went back there though...

Bloody hell!

They shouldn't have even begun to search your belongings without a member of the police present...........if your stopped by a member of store security, and you obviously havn't stolen anything, demand they call the police before you move a step........they soon lose interest after that :)

Actually store security can search your belongings as long as there is a third person present. this is normally another store security person or a senior manager from the store.

Yup, but if you refuse to let them then they have no alternative than to call the police :) (of course, you have to be a little adamant in your protests)

if you do that then they assume that you are guilty and so the cops come and arrest you and you dont get anything done till your booked in down the station

Yup, then they find nothing and the store get all the bad publicity of the police trailing through the place ;) ....... and you can demand a public apology from the store manager (and blemish his work record) :D

but as they are only doing their job correctly then it wont matter

That's the point. With all the social prejudice about nine times out of ten they aren't doing there job correctly......they are targetting the people they assume to be shoplifting.

The trick is just to act confident at all times and you get away with it.

If in doubt and you have picked something up that you dont want, keep hold of it and give it to the checkout attendant

Hindsight is 20/20 blah blah blah :) At 16, what the hell did I know? But damn....after the fact, when I thought about waht I should have done....

As prepared as I was though, I never did get another opportunity to test out my new-found insight...'course I also got a new haircut by 17, so maybe that had something to do with it ;)

 I used to enjoy being "detained" by store or supermarket security personal, they never dared to search me thou, 'cause they feared a big scandal (talk about showing an attitude) if they ever attempted to do it :D
