Act like grown-ups. We can have heated hate-based debate yet be civil.

What you cannot seem accept or understand is that I have always been me, in everyone's face and as honest as I can at the moment. For intelligent people, insults are always unnecessary. People resort to insults when they've got no useful argument ... but can't stand letting the other guy have the last word. The problem is exasperated where politics is concerned, since silence in that arena is deemed acceptance. As a rule, I restrain my insults to nose tweaks and hidden slights. Calling someone a fucking looser achieves nothing save to end any hope of the other guy caring about what you have to say.
OTC's biggest problem in this field is that none of you are willing to accept that the other guy might have a valid point too.

I would add to that (kind building on the same thing from a different angle), that most folks have an innate inability to admit they could ever be wrong, and when proven wrong, refuse to ever acknowledge it. This condition is especially acute in Americans. It is practically part of our schooling, to learn that unique brand of arrogance. Couple that with the fact that most Americans know jack diddly squat about the rest of the world but what they see on TV, and it gets worse. Ignorance breeds fear and we 'merican just luvs us some fear!
No wonder much of the world hates us! People usually hate their betters! If the rest of the world is ever happy with the course of 'merican events or relations with 'merica then you just know it's because some liberal commie faggot is president and subscribes to that namby pamby "spirit of cooperation" bullshit! Sovereignty means sovereign! We are sovereign and we be tellin the rest of the world what to do and ruling by fear, and they are sovereign, because they can do things anyway they want as long as they don't piss us off!

One thing I dislike about myself is I come off more convinced of my "rightness" than maybe I am. I question myself a lot, and in part am very passionate about my convictions as a result.
One thing I notice about conservatives and liberals and the difference, and you can argue it all you want, but it would still be wrong because this is my personal experience and therefor an indisputable fact.....
Liberals and moderates will listen to Rush Limbaugh much as it makes their stomach turn. We like to see what is up with the opposition and why. I also know several liberals and moderates (myself among them) who went out of their way to see Fahrenhype 911, and see the counterpoint to the point. It is conservatives who read only books that agree with their opinions, refuse to even see a Michael Moore film, generally argue their philosophies with complete ignorance of the opposition.
Now this part here is my opinion and theory but I firmly believe none the less....
What is the reason you guys can't sit through a Michael Moore film, when I can listen to Rush and others on the other side without issue (other than with the politics)? It's simple, you folks place a higher importance in always being right, and refuse to admit mistakes or defeat. It's not necessarily that you are afraid old Mikey's films will change you away from conservatism, but more that often he proves you guys wrong on some issues point by point, and you can't abide that at all. Seems to me you guys are more afraid of admitting even to yourselves that you were wrong about something, than of paying for the consequences of your ignorance down the line....
That is also why you can truthfully label some liberals and all moderates as "flip-floppers". The simple fact is that they consider both sides of an issue and so are more in touch with the realities and grey areas of politics. Conservatives stand fast even when they are being completely foolish, and forge ahead never considering any other side of an issue.
