Then again, it could be imminent
AFP said:
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, 75, has lost consciousness, Israeli public radio reported, quoting Palestinian sources.

He lost consciousness "several hours ago", it said.

Arafat's senior adviser Nabil Abu Rudeina, meanwhile, confirmed that a team of doctors was examining the veteran Palestinian leader.

"A team of Tunisian and Palestinian doctors is examining the president," Abu Rudeina said in a statement read out to journalists in front of Arafat's headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

He said Arafat "needs more rest because of his fatigue" and added that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Jordan's King Abdullah II had offered to send doctors.

A source close to the Palestinian Authority said earlier that Mahmoud Abbas, the PLO's No 2, and premier Ahmed Qorei were also at the bedside of Arafat, 75, who officially has been suffering from a severe bout of flu.

Arafat grieviously Ill - Future of Iran

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Foreign doctors rushed to Yasser Arafat (news - web sites)'s side on Thursday to tend to the seriously ill Palestinian leader, who for decades has symbolized his people's struggle for statehood.

A senior aide said the Palestinian, Tunisian and Jordanian physicians recommended Arafat, 75, be moved to hospital but a final decision would be made only after the arrival later in the day of an Egyptian medical team.

The ex-guerrilla, loved by most of his people and reviled by many Israelis, has had stomach pains since last week.

Arafat's health took a dramatic turn for the worse on Wednesday and officials said he had been slipping in and out of consciousness, though on Thursday he had also been able to eat, talk and say prayers.

"He is still in a very serious condition and he is calling for his wife," one official said at Arafat's headquarters, where he has been effectively confined by Israel for the past two years.

Re: Arafat grieviously Ill - Future of Palestine

Sorry...didn't have time earier.

Here's the issue. Arafat has not groomed his successor, nor even picked one up yet. If he dies, there will be a vacuum of power in Palestine. Some would consider this a bad thing, with an internal battle for power potentially bursting over the borders. Some would consider this a good thing (especially with the coilition troops right next door) as a time to push Palestine towards democracy or subservience.

Good or ill? Comments?

Re: Arafat grieviously Ill - Future of Iran

If troops of any nation get involved the only thing that would increase is gorrilla and suicide tactics. A neutral party needs to negotiate with the leading contenders now and work something out before everythig slides into chaos.

I would assume that there is a second in command. These are not stupid men.

"His blood cells, which should normally destroy microbes, are currently destroying blood platelets," the doctor said.
what does this mean? anyone know what condition this is?

Re: Arafat grieviously Ill - Future of Iran

Yes the radicals are already in control in Iran. It's not going to get any worse there. Same goes for Palestine. It can only get better.

Both sides have pushed each other to near ruin for something as trival as land because rather then intergrate both sides would rather slaughter the other. "These are not stupid men" I think this is in the eye of the beholder.

Re: Arafat grieviously Ill - Future of Iran

He pulled off some very mighty deeds during his time. He's not stupid. Blindly dedicated to a cause we may or may not believe in, perhaps suffering from any number of personality disorders, but definitely not dumb as a post in the way he runs his show.
