odd. people I have met have said that it is there to help them out and such. Hell I think Posty said something about that. But for the most part it tried to make killers in some branches

Wrong. Don't confuse killing with soldiering. The modern battlefield is not about killing the enemy, although that does take place. The modern battlefield is about breaking your enemies will to fight. ;)
 
Actually, modern warfare pretty well ignores the common grunt. The biggest strikes today are information. Do you think that the US accidently produced video of the MOAB? Hell no. They wanted the world to know what they could do, without even having to resort to nukes (since everyone knows they won't use nukes anyways, noone's afraid of them anymore).
 
I like this quote...it's in relation to places like Iran and NK doing something while the USAs eyes (and troops) are elsewhere (Iraq, Afghanistan)

In relation to the original question... I think that its more the pressures associated with active warfare which pushes a noramally well-rounded soldier into a sick fuck. :D There are new rules and old rules being broken daily. What's one more rule broken in such a SNAFU

No argument there.... not forgiveable, but not unthinkeable either.

Life is action/reaction. If the actions that you're used to change dramatically, I'd think that your reaction to them would change as well.

That's why we train, and that's why things like the LOAC and Geneva Convention are preached to us starting around 6 months before deployment. Why do you think that scandals like the UN is having are relatively rare in US military actions? (waiting for somebody to shout that one down) I'm not saying we are a perfect military, but, usually, when we find those people, they get punished.
