Student Free Speech Deserves Protection
Sunday, August 01, 2004
By Scott D. Kahn

Recently, students at a Colorado university were told to write an essay on why President Bush (search) is a war criminal. When one student wrote instead that Saddam Hussein was the war criminal, she received a failing grade.
In fall, 2002, at University of California at Berkeley, the course description for "The Politics and Poetics of Palestinian Resistance" warned, "conservative thinkers are encouraged to seek other sections."

At Gonzaga University, officials sent a disciplinary letter to College Republicans who posted fliers around campus promoting a speech by David Flynn (search), author of “Why the Left Hates America.” University officials alleged that use of the word "hate" is "discriminatory" and forced the students to modify the flier.

This goes beyond 'PC', folks...

This happens in every college in the US. I received a C from a man-hater once. I used the same paper one of her old A students (2 years back) gave her fro the same exact subject. My friend Devon failed his political science class when he wrote a paper argueing that Bush was the worst thing that has ever happened to this earth. When he went into the Teacher's office to ask what happened, he saw all this Pro-Bush Propaganda. He put two and two together and dropped the class.

since when are teachers unbiased? it's not like this is suddenly a totally new phenomenon...

but still, i don't get it...if he wants the subject discussed in a paper, let them write about whether or not Bush is a war criminal. taking your own views to work like that, is just a sign of weakness.

It's also rampant in public schools. Not just universities, either, but you can see it more and more at the high school level in the US.

At a certain point, it ain't education, it's indoctrination. Frankly, I'm amazed that anyone has run across a conservative college prof. God knows, I only met one, and did 6 years of higher education.

Wow! That's double un-good!!

Additionally, many colleges require students to read leftist and socialist texts without offering books by conservative authors offering opposing viewpoints -- a policy that has been criticized as indoctrination.
Anyone for a good book burning?

Among other things, the Academic Bill of Rights would prohibit professors from grading students on the basis of their political or religious beliefs, encourage the presentation of a variety of political opinions, demand equal allocation of funds for student political activities and condemn the obstruction of invited guest speakers and literature handouts.
Here here!

Just so long as the right-wing realizes that this particular knife cuts both ways and is meant to be as sharp on the right as it is on the left.

i had one english professor who stuck up for gays to the point of it being annoying.
she made us read this short story about gay couples and write about it, and those who were against homosexuality were shot down and told they were closeminded and ignorant.
i agree that homophobia sucks, but it was dumb of her to assign that. i'm sure she knew that the world is not yet a place that loves gays.
... i think she was a closet dyke who wanted an excuse to complain about something :)

I haven't had this problem in my Education yet. Now, I have had some very liberal teachers, and gotten in some pretty good arguments with those teachers, but I don't believe I've ever gotten a bad grade because of my beliefs.

I'm with you... as an educator and one who has been educated I haven't encountered such biggotry... ever!

Its shocking to think how unprofessional some pedogy professionals actaully are!

Sadam killed his own people and is a criminal in that sense. she should not have failed UNLESS the paper was poorly written. and Gato free speech is not a one way street. Everyone has a right to their opinions and to voice the opinion

Not any longer. That is a liberal trend (PC is not conservative) thank you very much.

Since they've become biased in a relatively short timespan, wouldn't a better question be, how can we change it? I don't give a crap if the teacher/proffesor is a flaming liberal or a hate mongering conservative, the entire point to school, any school, is to learn. Opinions are not fact. Teach facts & leave the politics to the after school marches.

PC is on both sides of the coin Gonz. the liberals just use it more I will admit to that.

I see it more on the Religious Right rather than as a whole but

the porn thing
censorship(music and video games come to mind)
putting prayer back in schools

the Judeo-Christian religions, as well as the Muslim religion, has always been against pornography...

The group most currently trying to ban video games and music is on the left...blaming all sorts of bad behavior on said influences. these certainly are not folks on the 'religious right'

Are you sure it's the religious right?
The ACLU's Los Angeles director Ramona Richardson (search) says the cross makes some Angelinos feel "unwelcome." Seeing people point out that the cross signifies the historical founding of Los Angeles by Catholic missionaries. That historical argument seems to have some merit, because a few hundred miles north of L.A., federal Judge Phyllis Hamilton (search) recently ruled that seventh graders at a Contra Costa County school could be forced to say Muslim prayers in a history class for the sake of history.

Being an agnostic conservative, I always laugh my ass off when someone assumes I'm christian right....

Gato covered the points poignantly enough so I'll just add that religious right is not politically correct. They are what the PC crowd is railing against.

Well now Homey, don't you know they're synonymous. Whether it's true or not.

Sam Brownback is one of the senators who uses the music and video game thing quite a bit. the music thing was more of a democrat idea but it was embraced moreso by conservatives.
