Having one's priorities straight

WARNING: If this don't piss you off, I wonder what it would take.

The Associated Press says hundreds of firefighters from across the country who volunteered to help out in New Orleans were delayed in Atlanta for days of sensitivity indoctrination by federal authorities.

The firefighters were told by FEMA that it would take two days to train them before they could carry out their community service and outreach duties. Part of that training included classes on sexual harassment and lessons on how to deal with ethnic groups.

**end**

Now we know.

I have had it up to here (indicates upper forehead) with this shit. Human beings are in peril, dying even, and we delay the rescuers for sensitivity training? Do we think these firemen et al have never seen a woman or a black person before? Can they not effectively rescue them?

This is beyond an outrage.

If we as a society accept this, we are doomed doomed doomed. I personally plan to contact my US senators and representative, attach this story, and demand answers. I urge each of you to do the same. We all sat around our computers and wrung our hands and armchair quarterbacked and second guessed and all that shit. Many of us may have even donated some money to help. If we let this slip past us, we are the worst type hypocrites alive.

I for one refuse to let this go quietly. Somebody somewhere needs some damn sensitivity training all right...they need their sorry ass dumped into downtown New Orleans and left to fend for themselves for a couple weeks. If our priorities really are this far out of whack, then count me out forever. I don't want any more of it.

Sensitivity training.... :mad4:

As if we needed more proof that FEMA wasn't ready for this kind of shit to happen. The only sensitivity these guys needed, they got when they joined up to be firemen in the first place. Sensitive to the fact that they have to act as fast as possible to save as many people as possible.

2 days wasted!

Didn't you ever notice how many of the things you find in a harbour sink out of sight, never to be seen again?

Furthermore, anyone who is rescued and then claims they weren't treated properly, ought to be put back in the same situation they were rescued from until they apologize to the rescuer.

Unc, I was just reading the AJC and they're saying that "displaced" NO residents are flooding your job centers. How long do you think the love affaire will last before they're told to get the fuck back out and stop stealing Georgian's jobs?

What day is this? ;)

Well.. Its almost harvest time. We need the temp influx of apple pickers anyway.

There is actually a bit of a workage shortfall here. We can absorb a good 50,000 workers without blinking so long as they don't mind striving for more than 2 ticks above menial. September on is always a little lean with employees since the teens are all racing back to school.

You gotta give the gov't props for one thing: They deliver consistant results.

At least that's true..... I would agree with one thing though... Someone complains about "how" they are rescued should be ditched back into the shithole as quick as possible....

"We are the government and we are here to help you. Eventually."

And there-in lies the rub. The government is not here to help you. That's your job. If people took that bit seriously, then the debacle we saw in NO would never have happened. ;)

There's certain things that 'the people' could've done and some steps which were taken, but things like the levees... that takes more than just 'the people'.

The GVT is there to take the people's money and use it for the benefit of the people. I just don't see that happening in the way that it should have.

AFAIK...nobody was forced, at gunpoint, to live 18 to 20 feet below sea level right on a coastline. ;)

That is not the governments job at all...I think you are confusing our constitution with yours. The governments job is clearly stated in the pre-amble to our constitution...found here...

"promote the general welfare"

I think that putting a few mil$ into reinforcing those levees prior to Katrina would've helped promote the general welfare somewhat... mind you, hindsight is 20/20 and a few politicians need their eyes checked.

I think letting them know that they lived in a bowl, and had the distinct danger of , one day, being flooded out, would be a much better use for the money. If they accept the risk, then they shouldn't hold their hand out when the risk manifests itself. That's what insurance is for...Of course...insurance is also for another thread. ;)
