We ended up haggling on and eventually buying a 2009 (new) Hyundai Sonata Sport in red.
It's the v4, so it doesn't have the get up n'go of the v6, but it certainly has the gas savings that the van never dreamed of.
The pic below is not the Sport version, but gives you a good idea of. The Sport version has a sunroof, mag wheels and harder shocks...plus the iPod link for MrsBish. The size is good, although I'm getting used to it slowly for parking purposes. The kids don't have any issues with leg room and the truck space is surprisingly large. Drives well, nice and smooth, and the A/C actually works
