It was only a matter of time

Because they are temporary residents. 4 years and out, but the decision lingers. You're making policy, here, not just letting junior decide his room decor.

I am saying to make it an option. Not take away from the students who want it. Those that dont want it shouldnt have it.

I have my opinion as to why.

I don't think my college dorm room came equipped with a Gideon Bible. I brought my own anyway. All I recall being supplied in my dorm was the cockroaches.

what they feel is that it is crammming it down their throats. There is no need that they have to have it if they dont want it in their rooms. If its an option then they can choose to have one or not

And they can choose not to have one by shit-canning it. They can even have a little anti-throat-cramming ceremony to accompany its trip to the incinerator. No one is makin' 'em read it, no matter how much Leslie might want you to believe otherwise.

I will assume you have never resided in a college dormitory.

I have.

I can testify that, as a resident of a college dormitory, you are bombarded with everything from credit card applications to pizza coupons to cable TV solicitations to rental agreement offers for a dorm fridge to textbook sources to you name it. Amazingly, the only one that bothers anyone is a Bible that is also present in every hotel room I have ever stayed in, placed by the same people.

Now, know up front that I consider a credit card a dangerous tool. I do not have one. You could not give me one. They are as dangerous in the hands of a typical college freshman as a loaded pistol.

Know also that every college I am aware of requires each student to have their own laptop computer with internet access. With internet access, anyone anywhere at any time can read the Bible.

Nothing is being crammed down anyone's throat.

Change that.

Nothing is being crammed down these students' throats. What is being crammed down collective throats is this perpetual whining about everything that doesn't match 100% to a given person's choice of belief structure.

I got news for ya, citizens of Earth. This is a big ol' place, and there are a whole damn lot of people around. Not all of us think exactly like you do. Deal with it. It ain't the last time you'll have to. Being given access to something out of a benevolent spirit is not "cramming something down your throat". If you want to feel the physical difference, just let me know, we'll meet halfway somewhere, and I might cram this right fist down your throat then we'll discuss whether this was a similar experience to walking into a dorm room and finding a Gideon Bible. Otherwise, sit down, cool off, shut up, and realize that this world owes you nothing and will give you less. This ain't kindergarten. It don't revolve around you or your ideas. College is designed to be a setting for the free and open interchange of ideas, thoughts, cultures, knowledge, and experiences. Try some of them. Be open to a few. It's downright hilarious how college students are so open to bullshit like unisex restrooms, but a Bible is "cramming it down my throat". I'll cram something all right here in a minute, and it won't be a book.

Summary: You are in college. Grow the fuck up a little.

And I've given you several options for accomplishing that, and what they might call you be damned.

Shall we remove 'em from the public library as well? After all, they just sitting out there, you might fuck up and read one. On the public-funded dollar, too.

My dorm never had a bible in it, but it's also a state-sponsored school. But luckily for me, the place was generally roach-free.

I am living on one now. The reason I said to make it an option would be that those that want it can have it. If you opt not to then you would have nothing to complain about. I know people dont think like I do. But I am also not going to think like you do. Now lets turn the tables. What if the rooms were supplied with some other religious text? The majority vote it out unless they choose to bring their own or to have an option. Do you feel that said text should be there or not? After all it is the students that pay for the school. Before telling me to grow the fuck up, look at your assumptions then speak.

It would be different than from dorms. People dont have to stay in a library and sleep there. They are usually only there for a few minutes. Now the only similarity I can find there is that they can choose not to read it.

Here's an idea, and maybe what those Gideons will do. Hang out at the bookstore, hand out bibles to people that WANT them.

btw, anyone ever actually MET a Gideon? :hmm:

I had an instructor in college who was one. Didn't mention anything about it (or anything else irrelevant to the cousework) in class but there's an "about me" section on his website where he mentions it.

During my college experience I was bobmbarded with a thousand things I did not want. I either ignored the solicitor, or if it was thrust upon me by being placed in a dorm room or my mailbox I discarded what I didn't want and went on about my business. I certainly never organized a lynch mob and demanded that I be left free of intrusion from the source.

Had I moved into a room and had a copy of Necronomicron provided free of charge by the local Satan worshipping congregation, I would have promptly pitched the thing in a trash can, defacated on it, and had another beer.

Again, if a person cannot live their life without bitching and whining about everything they see that doesn't fit their exact world view, they are in for a miserable life. It strikes me odd that so many people pitch such a big fit over a Bible, but pretty much anything else is either A-OK or they simply don't worry about it. Maybe it's conscience. Who knows?

I think you're reading more into it than is there. Enough people pitched a fit to get it voted about, that's all. That's not saying it was "so many people." I'd suspect that most of the students who voted to have the bibles removed had nothing whatever to do with bringing it up for a vote.

I wonder, would you feel the same if there were three Qurans in each room and they voted to take those out?

To which Lovecraft fans(sorry but the Necronomicon nor anything by Lovecraft or even LaVey for that matter has anything with Satan worship) would call you disrespectful. Maybe those students dont want to disrespect the Bible or whatever book is there. As was said they dont want it so why not make it an option only to those who do want it? Is there a problem with that? I dont see them making a big deal just saying there is no need for it
