It's time to talk Haiti

Aristide forced out by US troops, more like guarded by them against his countrymen who want to tear him a new asshole.

US fucking up Haiti, no, that was actually france.

US troops going in to help things, I have no problem with that, as long as it is a UN move, which I think it is.

Aristide was removed from power by the will of the people, and the people needed some help.

and I must say that at times your blind faith and determination to insist that your government in handling its policies and humankind all over is "right" is absolutely appalling.

they came out of that, started doing well, till the meddling began.

I can't quite call it hate at this point, though it's getting there...more disgust and revulsion at this point.

Actually, France left Haiti destitute. They took everything off their side of the island that wasn't growing out of the ground, or site-built there. The Haitians stillhaven't recovered. As for the 'Docs', they were the best deal at the time, so we took it. Nobody else wanted to help one iota. Not even Canada, so don't get mad at just the US. Get mad at France, Spain (who owned the other half of the island at the time), and England (who's abduction of US sailors during the war of 1812 caused the US to get interested in Haiti in the first place). BTW...Wasn't Canada part of the UK's empire at that point in time? Guess we can blame Canada, too. :p

for the last 50 years, Paul, it's pretty much entirely been the US...backing, financing and inciting coup after coup at their whim

Haiti is pretty much haiti's own fault, not saying the US doesn't have it's issues involving minding it's own business (one day all tell you how a goverment was overthrown because of banana)

But sometimes the states does step in at the right time, and though most don't admit it, a lot of countries as the US for it's help. Haiti is trying to get out of it's eternal poverty, they need a stable goverment to do that, so I think most people there will actualy welcome the US troops.

though what they really need is a fair election, then let them sink or swim

PV...It's starting to look like we're ganging up on Leslie here, so I'll be stepping out.

Sorry, Les. I don't want people to think I'm picking on you too much. ;)

Ah fuck it, if we're gonna look at history then we should blame Africa, that's where human evolution began isn't it? If we're really lucky we could probably find a nice little muslim country with loads of oil to blame, might as well stick with tradition...

So are you trying to say that it's not a good idea to look into the past to see where this mess began? If the answer is "yes," then I'd have to wonder if it's for any reason other than it makes the US not look so bad.

Problem is that so many times we look at the past (everyone, not just the US) and completely miss the lesson.

The lesson is: taking responsibility and follow-through. If you (as a country) are willing to go into another country (whether asked to or not), and make decision that will affect that country's future...then you should be as willing to keep your eye on the country in question and help it find the best path should it fall astray.

The lesson which has to be learned should be applied in Iraq. A new constitution is being written and put in place, with a new leadership etc... Once the allied troops pull out...will someone be keeping an eye on Iraq to make sure that 5,10,15 years down the line no new despots take over? Violent uprisings? or will Iraq be on its own?
