OTTAWA, Canada (Reuters) -- Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, setting the stage for another clash with the United States, said on Tuesday he would soon introduce legislation to decriminalize the possession and cultivation of small amounts of marijuana.

The announcement was the strongest indication yet Ottawa would follow through on a promise it made last year to relax laws so that people found guilty of possessing small amounts of marijuana would not get a criminal record.

Chretien told a fund-raising dinner for the ruling Liberal Party that he did not intend to legalize marijuana and said he would press ahead with strategies designed to crack down on drug traffickers.

"We are not afraid to take on controversial issues. It is the right thing to do. For example, we will soon introduce legislation to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana," he said to applause from the audience.

Guess some folks will have another reason to drive to Canada.

I don't know how anyone else feels, but the fact that alcohol is legal and marijuana isn't has always seemed stupid to me.

Edit cause I ar a idjut.:retard:

Weed is a larger cash crop in the US than corn. If they legalize it ... or at least legalize taxed and government packaged dope-cigs. The cash windfall would be obscene.

You know, an old friend reminded me that 25 years ago in New York State, posession of up to 7/8 of an ounce was a civil offense with a fine not to exceed 50 bucks. Sometimes it seems like we're backing up as a society rather than going forward.

My sentiments exactly. The goverment would make a ton of money buy selling it, they could cut back on spending money to protect against it, and they could focus on, IMO, are much more harmful drugs, i.e. Heroin, Cocaine, Meth and whatever else people are snorting and shooting these days.

I understaand that weed isn't good for you, but people are still doing it. It is like smoking: there is a big friggin warning on the package that the product may kill you, but I don't see to many people quitting because of it. Just put that label on to the marijuana packages and everything will be fine.

 Missouri had a bill on the table this year for the senate to discuss. The idea was that Missouri is running out of money, so one of the good-ole-boys decided a good way to make money was to tax the sale of illegal drugs. Ok, true, it's a huge business, but they aren't talking legalizing, just taxing. I just have to wonder how many people they thought would really claim "Drug Dealer" on their income taxes.

PT, did you know that income from prostitution is supposed to be taxable & they won't report you to the "authorities". :rofl2:

The bill actually made a statement to that effect, that the information obtained would not be used to prosecute the dealers. Yeah Right.
