I disagree with it entirely, and I'll tell you why, because this has happened to me...

I was stopped by the police one day, while driving my Chrysler because I "fit" the description of someone who had just committed a crime (armed robbery). Seems that the perp had a similar car and was a black male. Now here's the kicker. My car is champagne in color (beige), but the car they were looking for was slate (dark grey). I had a passenger, but the guy was by himself. What in the hell gives them the right to stop me? They even had guns drawn as they approached my car! Sloppy work at best, deadly at worst. Now we get to the meat of the situation...How many times do you see the police pulling over a white male, with guns drawn, when there's a serial killer running loose? I've never seen it. Hell, I've never even heard of it, but I get my honor insulted because I'm driving the same model car? Bullshit. They explained why they stopped me, of course, but I never got an apology. :grumpy:

Okay...let's put it this way...If you're going to have it, then it must be applied evenly. If there's a serial killer in the area, then the majority of drivers stopped should be of the race white male between 18 and 40. If you have a problem with drugs, then stop everybody. If you have a problem with terrorists, then stop middle eastern men. This country has a habit of singling out black men as criminals, and subjects us to indignities on a daily basis. You can say what you will, but if you push some-one long enough...

Gato, as we both know the world will never be fair, pointless trying to make it so. And you're right, push too far and..

Actually i was hoping for some passionate debate on this issue. Personally i'm for racial profiling. Although i do understand your feelings Solo, i feel that overall it probably does more good than harm. Now i've never seen any statistics on racial profiling so granted i might be wrong. What bothers me though is the idea that if a cop's informing another cop of the discription of an individual that he's permitted to say, male 5'10" brown hair brown eyes thin/ and then stop without giving his race when at the least it will cut his suspects in half. It's not the system that's malfunctioning but individual police officers. So why don't we re-educate the cops that make mistakes rather than do away with a part of the system that works. If you have a headache will you cut off your head? That said, i do think that when it comes down to it that racial profiling should be dealt with on a jurisdictional basis. I'm sure it's far worse in some places then others but let those responsible communities use it if they don't abuse it.
"it must be applied evenly"
Well isn't that the whole debate? That in some places law enforcement either abuses their power or acts without thinking. I think a better solution lies in education and strict guidelines for law enforcement officials. My ideas on the subject are not set in stone but this is my current train of thought.

If applied evenly, I have no problem. Unfortunately, it's only applied selectively. Most of this comes from the media we all know and love. I can count how the media has given us positive black role models on both hands. I have to use a calculator to count the negative role models. Most blacks are cast as pimps, thieves, rapists, drug dealers, or drug addicts/wino's. Most hispanics are cast the same. Middle eastern folks are cast as terrorists or terrorist sympathizers, and we grow up seeing these things and, ulitimately, believing them. It's not fair, and it's not truthful, but we all suffer for it.

I have a question that's been bothering me now for quite some time, though...

How do the folks on Friends afford such a large apartment in New York City on such meager salaries? Nicely furnished, too. Why aren't the cops busting down that door and throwing them in jail? They obviously have some other source of income that they've been hiding...

there is a difference between a show and RL....
the show is recorded in San Fransisco or somewhere around there..

i'm sorry Gato, I can see your point, but this question is just rediculous.

It is unfair and it is a lie. Thankfully things are still changing for the better, Slowly but surely. The media will change with time also or they will pay for their ignorance the hard way. I see it changing. As always, changing the ignorant mind is the only way to growth. Unfortunately with most people(networks/bodies/media/organizations) you can't just sit down with them, tell them where they're going wrong, and expect them to accept all the truths. People are just to hard headed to be so wise. I see your point with the friends comment. There's many other shows just like it to, with white actors. When making a comedy the network guys want that viewing audience to be able to identify with the characters of that show. So why have they made so many black centered comedies with characters that are either stupid or poor? Because that's the way the network guys viewed that audience! Then along came the Cosby show and waddya know but the black audience loves the show as much as white people. It wasn't the networks idea to make Bill Cosby and Felisha Rashad a doctor and a lawyer in that program, it was that way because Cosby is a powerhouse and he willed it. This is one example how change takes place. But... one lesson is never enough.

Racial profiling isn't done for the single cases. Its done for the GENERAL cases. In GENERAL, it was the Middle Eastern guys that blew up the WTC... It is the Middle Eatern guys that hijacked planes. And so forth.

what about the school shootings?, make a profile of them as well?

those are truly terrorists.

Actually, it's not ridiculous. That's how racial profiling works.

1. Who are you? (race/sex/religion/etc.)
2. What are you doing here?(surroundings/neighborhood)

Those 2 questions are the first step to profiling. Then it move on to the next level...

3. Do you belong there? (first zinger)

Now we get to the relevance of the Friends statement...

4. How can you afford the things you have, if you don't look as though you belong there?
5. Where do you work?
6. If you don't 'belong' there, you're obviously up to no good, so we should take a close look at you. Maybe stop you and, under the guise of a traffic stop, do an eyeball search...

It's engrained in the American criminal justice psyche that black people, especially males, are inherantly bad people, and white people are inherantly good. That's why I don't like the media, and their portrayal of minorities. It's a viscious cycle.

I'm not gonna argue my opinion lest I insult someone. However, I would just state that I support it and I applaud our government for quizzing Middle Eatern men a bit tougher than other people.

:) Nice one!!!

Well, honestly, I can't say for sure on this one. It has its merits, but then it has some downsides.

I remember this though, back in the day, in my extremely exended and diverse undergraduate studies, I made the mistake of taking a criminology class. Well, needless to say, I found out that basically they try to teach this racial profiling, or profiling if you want to take off the racial part (although i don't think you can). We had this dumb ass assignment to go sit somewhere and basically profile everyone. I did mine, but I left out race, further I said that it was impossible to complete the assignment as directed without making racist assumptions about people. Well, the thing was, the bitch wanted us to sit and observe people, what they looked like, how they dressed, then tell what they were like (ONLY BASED ON APPEARANCE). Well, I told her what I thought of her little assignment in my paper, and did what was asked, basically, and the bitch gave me a D- I believe. It was my first paper that i didn't recieve an A on. She just didn't want to hear the truth. I hate profs like that!!! Needless to say I wasn't happy.

Well my point is, they teach this garbage, they are doing it regardless of whether they are "supposed to" or not. Its a moot point really, cuz most of what they teach these simpletons is to idenify what they THINK the person might be like, and then, based upon personal beliefs, take some action.

I can't say I'm for it actually, cuz they are doing it anyway. If they had the "right" to do it, they would only be worse than they already are in harassing people based on what they THINK the person might be like, which of course is based 100% on their appearance, and their appearance alone!!!
