Danish pizzeria bans French and Germans

A Danish pizzeria has banned French and Germans from dining there because of their country's stance on a war with Iraq.

Aage Bjerre, who owns Aage's Pizza on the island of Fanoe, said he's tired of French and German attitudes toward the United States.

He's put two homemade drawings on the shop door, one a silhouette of a man coloured red, yellow and black for Germany and another in the red, white and blue for France.

Both silhouettes have a bar across them.

He says Germans will be allowed in if their country joins a war on Iraq, but the French will have to endure a lifetime ban.

Aage said: "Hadn't the United States helped Europe in defeating Germany, there would have been photos of Adolf Hitler hanging on the walls around here."

The ban has yet to effect his business because the tourist season only starts after Easter and peaks during the summer. "I do what my conscience tells me to do," he said.

He added: "Frenchmen have a lifetime ban here. Their attitude toward the United States will never change."

I heard last week that a restaurant had renamed their french fries. I think they called them Union fries, or American fries. Summat like that.

Freedom fries... Its not just one restaurant though, its happening all over. Just fries, or freedom fries, but not French fries anymore.

French Fries were named after a guy with the last name "French".

But people are idiots.

I still say we rename Canadian Geese "Liberty Geese" and Canadian Bacon "Patriot Bacon" or some other such cheesy nonsense.

renaming the fries is the most pathetic move they could have come up with...

enjoy driving those BMW's and Mercedes as well.... complete ban on all German things as well, but somehow i doubt people would like to switch brand of cars...

hypocrit and pathetic.

I don't like what the French and Germans are doing, but I still drive a Mercedes. After all, I'm for the idea of free commerce around the globe... one of the many goals of liberating Iraq. I don't see how my switching cars would be upholding my beliefs; despite whatever feelings I have, Germany is still essentially a free country.

That being said, I don't see the blatant hypocrisy in renaming "French fries" to "freedom fries." It's a simple expression of an opinion. Some people do it by writing articles in journals, others march in peace rallies (I don't remember anyone saying the peace protestors in London were hypocrits or pathetic), and some simply rename their fried potatoes.

How, again, is that hypocritical and pathetic? Why is expressing an opinion that matches yours perfectly acceptable, but expressing a different opinion is pathetic? If there's anything I would call hypocritical...

I disagree with Squiggy, but I respect his opinion. I agree with some of what he says, and think some of what he says is hypocritical. But by all means, I'm not going to call him pathetic for choosing to express his opinion, whatever it may be.

it's not only the renaming of the fries...the boycot of the french wine as well. you're missing my point over here. why are people taking things out on the french by those useless boycots and not against the germans, belgians or russians who share their opinion? all you see is people bitching about the french, not those others who share the same opinion.
THAT osli, is hypocrit.

expressing your opinion is perfectly ok, and i would be the last one to object when your opinion doesn't match mine. even more, i don't give a damn whether somebody agrees or disagrees with me or not.
like i stated above, taking things out on just the french is hypocritical in my opinion. if you think otherwise, well, fine.
for the pathetic part...that's also part of my opinion isn't it? i find it pretty sad when people are renaming fries because it has 'french' in it. it's completely unrelated to the matter that is important.
the wine boycot would make sense to a certain point, but renaming french fries is pathetic and highly childish in my opinion.
