For the year of 2002:
Basic personal amount: $7,800
Tuition deduction at $400/month: $1,600
Tuition fees and textbooks: $4,000
Accomodation: $1,700
That is roughly $15,000 just there.
In addition, Ontario's basic personal deduction is $7,817.
Contributions to charitable donations are also deductable from your income tax. There goes another $1,500.
Now what about the time and resources used at home to work? Deduct some of the cost of the computer (I type up reports for work at home), part of the telephone bill, and so forth (yes this is legal in Ontario).
Overall I can't see what you (flavio and Q)'s hangup is. I have enough deductions so that the federal government see me as a no-income person. If you classify using all possible deductions as a crime, then I'm a criminal. Don't care.
Oh and flavio/Q, there is a difference between taking handouts from the government while you pay taxes (hence you really just lower the overall contribution made to the government without going into a negative mode, ie leeching off society), and taking handouts while not paying taxes. And no, I don't take handouts from the government.
In the words of Ardsgaine, try to read it at least six times before responding. Oh and, use your grey cells. I know its hard, but try ok?

Honestly flavio, try harder. If I had an income of $4,000 last year, I can deduct $7,800 that the federal government gives every person. That means you have deducted MORE than you earn. Nothing dishonest about it in my opinion. I realize you think differently, so let us just agree to disagree there ok?By claiming that you spent more money on deductible items than you make you are evading taxes.
I have not stolen anything. In the last year or so, I have paid over $1,000 in taxes (EI and CPP). I have not received anything from the government, but I have hired a professional accountant to prepare my tax return. Now tell me, how is that stealing? It's obvious that you don't "look at yourself" as your stealing is somehow justified.
I never said anything about my family and whether they have a problem with this kind of socialism or not. I, however, will take all that is legally mine from the welfare system provided I do not steal from society. If I paid $1,000 in taxes I have no problem taking $1,000 from welfare. What I will NOT do, however, is take more than I've been taxed. And no, I have not done that. We've established that you are a hypocrit, are you trying to establish your family as hypocrits too?
