Every religion has its zealots...tell a zealot that he's risking his life for his religion/God...he'll die for you and kill for you. Like you said...think of the crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, the Salem Witch trials, etc etc...

Now if I wasn't so level headed I would suggest taking the peopel they want freed, bringing them to this sight, and then executing them in a way that would not allow them into heaven my islamic law one at a time, till they let everyone go.

It's a difficult one. You can't negotiate with them, because that only encourages the belief that terrorism will work every time to get their own way. You can't bomb the school back to the stone-age because that's unconscionable. I guess it has to be a seige lock-down. Cut off supplies, feign negotiation, until you can get troops in there to rescue the poor little kiddies.
Another difficulty is that Russia ain't exactly been playing nice in Chechnya.

The Russians got into a civil war situation. Civilians got hurt, as usually happens in a war. They didn't wake up one morning and say to themselves, "let's go wipe us out a grade school." That's exactly what the terrorists in this story did.

The funny thing is that this is almost certainly what the terrorists want.
They know there is no way out for them, they know that they are dead meat whatever happens. What they want is to bring chechnya back into the news. They want people to talk about it and decide that the Russians are in the wrong.
They know their demands will not be met and they are probably willing to kill those innocent kids, because they know if they do it will be on every news show in the world and on every discussion forum on the internet. The more people know about this act the more they know about the fact that the Russians are occupying their homeland.
So from their pov mission accomplished. They are willing to die in furtherance of an islamic state and so their place in heaven as martyrs is assured.
