Mine all died a horrible death shortly after Christmas :(

We have a local pizza joint that has a bunch still live in their store front window...must be the greenhouse effect.

Outside of general neglect on her part, nothing. Including general neglect on her part, about half the leaves have shed due to indoor heat (house closed up on weekends) and lack of watering. It's overgrown, and straggly, and now twiggy too. She's uncertain what route to take with it (outside of black bagging it, that is) to restore it. Given the damage it's taken, Hacking it down might be too much. Personally, I'd think a little TLC to give it some new reserves before hacking it down would be a better idea. But, since I know you're a "point" man, I suggested that she talk with you before taking drastic measures. But right now, she's occupado with some church stuff, involving punk kids and a skateboard ramp dumped at the church.

I would say prune it back, water it heavily AND MOST IMPORTANTLY - keep it away from air vents (mine shrivelled up due to dry air), maybe mist it daily.

Um .... you do realize that everyone's at the cottage, fulltime. Mum was only down for this weekend to get some church stuff done. Who's supposed to do this misting? Me?

Before you go that route ,just give her $20 and tell her to buy a new one. They should be out in stores soon ,we've had Christmas stuff(fake trees, wrapping paper/ribbon ,assorted deco )for sale for 3weeks already.:eek3:

She may have to repot it. If it hasn't been watered for a while, the roots probably went searching for water and spread right to the edges of the inside of the pot. They'll have to be cut back about 30%, the soil changed etc... add about 1" of small rocks/pebbles to the bottom for better drainage. If you water it without changing the soil (which is probably too compact to drain properly), you'll drown it. Wait at least 1 day after the repotting before watering it...and only minimally.

If the larger branches are still healthy, you can trim the plant by removing new growth..especially near the bottom (on the trunk)...the new growth will stifle the old growth otherwise, and it'll get bushy.

She's got to get it relatively healthy before putting it away for the Christmas colour grow.

Thanks Marc. I'll print that out for her. BTW, she went on a baking binge last week. She'd found something of the order of a 10lbs bag of bananas for 99 cents or summat like that and summat tripped. She's peeled off a dozen banana breads, irish tea loaf, etc. And I jsut brought her back 6 lbs of yellow margerine from NY, so that'll shift her into second gear.

Yup. although, the north road through Ontario would shave most of a day off it. Come down through Rouyn Noranda.
Total Est. Time: 44 hours, 17 minutes Total Est. Distance: 2233.06 miles

Nope. Thought about heading west on vacation a time or two, but always got pulled somewhere else. Furthest west I've been is Hearst, On. Dad loved the ocean, so the maritimes was always our destination of choice. Last 5 years the missus and I've discussed changing up our routine, but the last two years were dominated by the OTC BBQs, and before that, the difficulty of taking small children on long drives.

After all heading east, you're never more than an hour from 'somewhere'. Heading west, you can be 8 hours and the closest place is still 'nowhere' until you hit the Rockies.
