The vaccine shortage

Hey, fuck it. America has done nothing to improve your lives. We're nothing more than a giant child sucking off the tit of humankind. Had we not been here you'd all be right where you are, doing what you do, using the same tools & having the same luxuries. Nope, America is nothing in the annals of history.

Just imagine how much better a Yemeni air conditioner would be compared to a Czech made one.
That simply is not what was said (once again). It's the childish belief that every worthwhile thing ever since the revolutionary war was originally accompished by Americans and that no one in the world is as capable or as intelligent as we are that Prof (and I) took issue with. It's admirable to have national pride, but having it to the point of idiocy is, well, idiotic.

I guess that you know from experience that the Czechs can't build a working air conditioner then? What about them poe-locks then?

I'll just add my 2cents worth. :brush:
It seems there was a time when if you bought something made US, you knew
you were getting "quality" products. Now everything is outsourced to the point
that quality has become second hand, and it's not just the outsourcing,
people in general "by and large" just don't take enough pride in their work
here "in" the US, anymore.

We need to really get the "quality" factor back. :crying4:

why are US tour operators organizing tourgroups to Canada, "Vaccine shot included in the price"? Oh, and the vaccine shot ...

Because of media hype. When some idiot newspaper writer complains Dick Cheney got one!!! and is responded to with So did Willie!!! it's hype. Cheney & Clinton are prime candidates due to medical conditions. It's when callers to some show or another call & complain that "I have asthma..." and then drones on about being unable to find a doctor with the shot or willing to give it to them that it's no longer reasonable.

There was no flu vaccine a decade (or so) ago & today we're all gonna die without it?!?!?!

Hey chcr, do you have one? Do you know anybody that has one? Know anybody that has ever had one? Didn't think so.

Sometimes I hate OFF Topic Central.

The point of this thread was Edwards, not Clinton or geopolitical medicine. DAMNIT!

in your first post, you blamed clinton AND geopolitics, so naturally I absolutely had to rebut that lol :D

but yes, that is a huge problem it seems there...from my perspective up here, somehow this lawsuit issue very much needs to be nipped in the bud or everthing is just going to collapse.

gonz, i was offered one by my doctors surgery this week because i am asthmatic and therefore on their list of people to immunise against 'flu. they are the first doctors i've been with who have invited me in to have the shot but they have a strong asthma monitoring system.

i doubt i'll take it up though, my asthma is mild and been improving generally in the last year or two.

You guys are not seeing what the real problem is. Almost everybody can live just fine without a flu vaccine, everything else is just paranoia.

That's true, Luis, but that was not the point of the thread. ;)

What the big diffence is:

Here in the US, citizens invest tens-of-billions of dollars collectively to develop medicines in hopes of getting a profit in return. I would be willing to bet the no country in the world has anywhere near the privite money dumped in to research that the US does.

But if they can't get a profit back, why risk their money that could help if its going to cost them in the end.

Yeah its selfish, but it works!!! If they had some minimal protection from oppertunist like John Edwards. More people would be willing to risk their money to help others while making a profit (win/win)

Vaccine makers for the U.S. market used to discard as much as 20 percent of their production, said Wayne Pisano, executive vice president for commercial operations at Aventis. There were many reasons.

With a large number of manufacturers, it was difficult for any single company to predict how much vaccine it would sell. The companies all offered contracts in which buyers could return unused vaccine, generally as much as 10 percent of an order, for a full refund. About 10 percent of customers double-ordered vaccine in non-binding agreements, paying for the first batch that arrived and canceling the other.

Look around you. Telephone...American. Lightbulb...American. Refrigerator...American. Car...American. Computer....

Thomas Edison's greatest challenge was the development of a practical incandescent, electric light. Contrary to popular belief, he didn't "invent" the lightbulb, but rather he improved upon a 50-year-old idea. In 1879, using lower current electricity, a small carbonized filament, and an improved vacuum inside the globe, he was able to produce a reliable, long-lasting source of light. The idea of electric lighting was not new, and a number of people had worked on, and even developed forms of electric lighting. But up to that time, nothing had been developed that was remotely practical for home use. Edison's eventual achievement was inventing not just an incandescent electric light, but also an electric lighting system that contained all the elements necessary to make the incandescent light practical, safe, and economical.

Electric Light Bulb ...Henry Woodward :canada: invented the electric light bulb in 1874 and sold the patent to Thomas Edison

Canadian inventors and those who distinguished themselves while living in Canada including Alexander Graham Bell, Reginald Fessenden, Guglielmo Marconi, Sir Frederick Banting, Dr. Charles Best, Sanford Flemming, Joseph Bombardier, Abraham Gesner and James Williams.

OK...back on topic. The USA is short on vaccines, not because they don't have the facilities or the knowhow to manufacture them, but because it's not financially viable for them to do so.

It's not financially viable because:
a) Billary made vaccines low-profit items
b) Law Suits have stripped away minimal profits
c) Outsourcing production is cheaper
d) One of their major suppliers had a recall
e) Not enough product from their other suppliers

btw...this isn't a pick one multiple choice, but a timeline. The part that buggers up the process seems to be that Law Suits have forced vaccine manufacturers to stop production despite money spent in the past for R&D.

Seems to me that law-suits do more to fuck up the potential for the USA to be better and stronger than anything else in its history. Capitalism works until capitalism screws it up.
