I think this was brought up before when I have used that term. A wife beater is the fitted, ribbed, white tank top that you usualy see the fat white trash guys wearing when COPS bust down their door for a domestic dispute. I have never heard it called anything else with the exception of sleveless undershirt by a few older men at a department store.
