Oh? Why did the U.S. go to war with Iraq?

Because those elected members in Congress wanted to look tough on terrorism before the election.

Also...because Saddam Hussein was trying to avert an invasion from Iran by pretending that he had WMDs, figuring that the US would only launch a few cruise missiles. You know, Gothy, you REALLY need to read more before you post this kind of nonsense. That "Bush Lied troop died" crap was disproven more than twice in this very forum.

I'll wait here for that popping sound signifying you removing your head from your butt...

I still believe they Did have bio/chem weapons.
Lord knows they had plenty of time to move it to Syria, and we know Syria has that kind of stuff.

That's all old news now though.
It means nothing except to remember the soldiers lost, and for those of us
who want to help....keep helping the families of those lost that need it.
(that should be the focus. Not partisan BS.)

Oh? It wasn't about saving the petrodollar? The Iraq war was unconstitutional. No war was declared.

Let's see...

Disputed press reports

A number of press reports describe the Iraqi dictator admitting to a catastrophic miscalculation, having misled the United States into believing Iraq still possessed biological and chemical weapons.[21] According to the Associated Press: "Saddam Hussein told an FBI interviewer before he was hanged that he allowed the world to believe he had weapons of mass destruction because he was worried about appearing weak to Iran".[3]

This interpretation has been challenged by journalist Solomon Hughes, writing: "You might remember that we invaded Iraq because Saddam did have WMD, but was pretending he didn't. Now it turns out we invaded Iraq because Saddam did not have WMD, but pretended he did."

How did Saddam let the world believe Iraq had WMD by denying he had WMD? How does this story work? It doesn't, because the [Associated Press] report is false. FBI agent Pinto's actual record of a casual conversation with Saddam reads: "Even though Hussein claimed Iraq did not have WMD, the threat from Iran was a major factor as to why he did not allow the return of the UN inspectors. Hussein stated he was more concerned about Iran discovering Iraq's weaknesses and vulnerabilities than the repercussions of the United States for his refusal to allow UN inspectors back into Iraq." So in 1998 Saddam resisted the UN weapons inspectors because he did not want to look weak in front of Iran, with whom he had fought a vicious eight-year war. This is not the same as pretending to have WMD. Saddam did not want to look like he could be pushed around by the UN lest his neighbours scent weakness, but his government repeatedly—and accurately—denied having WMD.[22]
This view is shared by The Independent's Middle East correspondent Patrick Cockburn who says "In reality, the Iraqi leader made every effort to prove that he had no WMD."[23]

my post pointed in the same directions as yours. you not getting that is regrettable.

the war in iraq was a mistake. on many levels. but at the same time, its results are interesting. we will be cutting ourselves loose from the middle east soon enough. maybe not so bad.

I still believe that all of the WsMD that he had were exported to Syria prior to our getting there. Now that Assad is sending out feelers for asylum it may come to pass that those WsMD end up in the hands of upstanding young men of the Muslim Brotherhood who would never actually use them on innocent people.

that makes about as much sense as russia sending weapons to china to hide them from us. yeah saddam loves syria. 'specially after gulf war I. :retard: he might as well have sent them to iran for safekeeping! and he's buddies with iran. of course he is. 'cause they're all muslims!

the muslim brotherhood? how the fuck would they fit into that equation? 'cause they're buddies with assad? and iran too perhaps? hmmm yeah not so much...

until you know more than fuck-all about the various groups and interests in the middle east, you might want to keep your crackpot theories to yourself.

Syria and Iraq were not enemy states.

The Muslim Brotherhood is a group that operates throughout the Arabic world, not just in Egypt. They seek to control as much of the Middle east as possible and Syria is no exception.

It is not a crackpot theory. You need to study up.

jim, seriously, just give it up. saddam and assad were not buddies. assad fought on the coalition side in the first gulf war.

the muslim brotherhood comes from a VASTLY different ideological tradition than saddam OR iran. who are also quite opposed to one another. however the latter is friendly with assad, in a relative sense.

do some reading and get back to me when you understand the basics of the political/ethnic/religious differences in the middle east. when you get up to speed perhaps we can discuss things like the more amusing aspects of alawism.

Goth, it was not an "illegal war". Congress, and the fucking UN Security Council both voted for it.

WMDs were, by accounts, actions & words of Hussein, in Iraq. Either he lied (surprise surprise)
or they were re-located.

It's been over a decade, get over it.

yeah, get over it for sure, but the evidence for WMDs there was shown to be inadequate. yer boy wanted to invade iraq to begin with. the fact that he got dipshits believing that saddam was in al quada was as pathetic as "mission accomplished."

what was it maybe 4000 US killed after we "won?" but hey it did make the arab spring possible. :retard:

The legality of the Iraq war is debatable. As for Congress giving the president the authority, that was conditional, and those conditions were not met.

Where are you getting this? Saddam Hussein DENIED having WMDs. Also, the U.N. weapon inspectors did go into Iraq and found no WMDs.

It's been over a decade, get over it.

How callous of you. Anyway, The Iraq war was being referenced because the same M.O. is being used to go to war with Iran.

yeah that's where you're wrong, dingbat. iran actually is a serious regional threat. we can't have them getting pissed and starting a nuke fest with israel.

now, i'll grant that most of the folk in iran are reasonable. but they got this persistent hardline fag talkin' holocaust-denyin' element. fuck that shit. time for them to go away.

toilet time for tiny town.

Again, Iran does not have nor are there indications of them pursuing a nuclear weapon. Also, even if they did, Israel has their own nukes and can defend themselves.

BTW, Iran's Supreme Leader calls the shots. Their president does not have the same power as the president of the U.S.
