How's your garden doing?

growing too many vegetables???

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb County is suing a local farmer for growing too many vegetables, but he said he will fight the charges in the ongoing battle neighbors call “Cabbagegate.”

Fig trees, broccoli and cabbages are among the many greens that line the soil on Steve Miller’s more than two acres in Clarkston, who said he has spent fifteen years growing crops to give away and sell at local farmers markets....

Have a nice trip Val! Where are you travelling in France?
1) fly to Paris
sight seeing (Notre Dame, Basilique du Sacré Coeur, Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, etc.) including the Grande Arche de la Défense
trip to a park (forgot the name) to rent a row boat (mega romantic!)
2) train to Caen
with a day trip to Bayeaux to see the Bayeaux Tapestry
sightseeing in Bayeaux (lots of great old architecture) and Caen
3) train to La Rochelle
day trip to Ile d'Aix, last residence of Napoleon
day trip to Ile de Ré, where donkeys wear pants
- bicycle ride around the island with a break on the beach to eat our picnic lunch
4) Royan
walked along the coast, spent time soaking in the sun on the beach
5) Tournon St Martin
we know a master chef with a hotel and restaurant there, we ate like royalty
6) train back to Paris
Marché aux Puces (where I bought a Soviet Engineer corps winter uniform hat)
Louvre Museum
Dali Museum (Espace Dali)

Awesome trip... 2.5 weeks. In retrospect, we could have cut out Royan to travel around less but we had 1st class tickets on the train (not much more for the upgrade) and it was always pleasant.

In this economy the government should understand that growing food is #1 priority for people. However...
"In January, Dekalb County code enforcement officers began ticketing him for growing too many crops for the zoning and having unpermitted employees on site.

Miller stopped growing vegetables this summer and the charges were put on hold as he got the property rezoned."
Looks like he is going about fighting this the right way and will get the property rezoned. Unfortunately, the county is pursuing the old charges and continuing with the prosecution.

yeah, those so-called "unpermitted employees" were just people he told
to pick their own stuff, and the gov. considered that as payment. BS.

at least that's my understanding.

People have been selling home-grown produce on the side of the road from the back of a pickup
here for as long as I can remember, without having to have a permit, and now
the gov. want a slice.

They also want a slice of ...
a lemon-aid stand, and any grass cutting/lawn maintenance profit...

I could see it if it was a full-time business, but to cut into the money some
kids want to make a little periodically is BS.
The first job I had was neighborhood grass cutting with a push-mower.
To rake away any possibility for a kid to learn how it is to own, or manage a business independently is just wrong.
The greed has gotten absolutely ridiculous.

Your local government is full of horse shit.
:horse:
Where do you live so I know never to move there? :p LOL!

Can we have private property back?
Why? So some paid-for politician can steal it from you, call it Eminent Domain and give your land to his/her developer buddy for a sweet kickback?

Actually, we have private property. But a lot of people live in HOA controlled areas or live in areas that were zoned with restrictions. I can understand some of the restrictions but some simply go too far. Everyone should have the right to grown food on their property.

They rezoned my property from farm to residential, without even any notice.
I just found out a couple of years ago, when I had it surveyed.

My lettuce just popped up today in my starter boxes.:glasses:

Cabbage oughta be up soon.

I planted some apple seeds, but I don't know if they will grow.
Half of them came from store bought apples, and the other half from
apples of a neighbor's tree. (those latter ones have been in the freezer since last year)

Bought a bunch of seeds today, looks like I'm going to do this this year.

- Two kinds of tomatoes
- Yellow and bunching onions
- Zucchini
- Butternut squash
- Carrots
- Pumpkin (for jack-o-lanterns at Halloween)
- Spinach

Now to start researching when to plant, what needs to be pre-planted inside, etc.

I'm making a rabbit box.
Looked up the instucs for a nice one today.
They won't get my lettuce this year.:smash:

Ah! Just went to put the seed packets away and butternut squash isn't there...it also isn't on my receipt. Must have forgot to pick it up, now I need to go back to the greenhouse...that is never a cheap trip.

Plan it to transplant 6-8 weeks after planting inside. That date should be no less than after the last frost happens. I typically move mine outside around Jume 1st (too many mid-May frosts)

I got my cucumbers, and canalopes in a box today.

Only 2 of 24 cabages came up, so I got those non-starters re-planted.
I had 20 lettuce come up, and had to re-plant only 4 on those.

lol, I had a pack of pumpkin seeds, IO think my neice got from somewhere.
The prices on the pack was .59. There was a total of 7 seeds in there.:rofl3:
I hope they grow good when I plant them.:p

Good lord that's a lot for 7 seeds. You could always just save your pumpkin seeds for the following year. They'll turn out just fine as long as they weren't hybrids or something.

I did not start seeds like I usually do. I plan on buying plants this year instead. I'll probably get working on my garden soon.

Asparagus didn't come back after our terrible freezes. I don't know if it will. I always thought asparagus starts sending up shoots by now. :(

Just curious, do you buy your plants online? If so, where?
