Hurrican Charlie.........

Best wishes, Floridians!

Mare, I didn't know you worked at a golf course. When you're all safe and sound - let's chat! Is it a public/private course? What do you do?

A logistics nightmare?
TAMPA, Fla. - Officials warned an estimated 800,000 residents and tourists Thursday to get out of the way of Hurricane Charley, saying parts of Tampa's downtown and nearby areas could be submerged by the massive storm surge likely when the hurricane strikes Florida's central gulf coast on Friday.

That may be true but unlike earthquakes, the underground infrastructure stays intact during a himmicane (Charlie is the problem right). Most city residents have power returned in less than 24 hours. If one lives in the boonies they are better prepared anyway.

Granted, these are all good suggestions & should be followed in daily life in case of any disaster.

The problem is widespread devastation that wipes out utilities and leaves roadways covered in sand and debris and thousands of people homeless or stranded. While it may only be a couple of days before power is restored, if the storm is bad enough, water supplies can be interrupted or contaminated for days due to saltwater incursion. And everything grinds to a halt because you can't get around until the roads are cleared and traffic signals are restored. If you evacuate, it could be a few days before you are allowed back into your neighborhood.

In general, hurlycanes can be a pain in the tookas. Fortunately they are few and far between. Unfortunately, they are extremely unpredictable.

Hurricane Andrew did this:

January 17, 1994: A 6.7-magnitude earthquake in the Northridge section of Los Angeles kills 72 people, injures 9,000 and causes $25 billion in damage.

Natural disasters suck.

NWS Nat'l Hurricane Center

EVACUATE

The key words in that statement:

STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 10 TO 13 FEET IS ALSO POSSIBLE NEAR AND SOUTH OF THE WHERE THE CENTER CROSSES THE FLORIDA WEST COAST.

That would be enough to get me moving inland pronto.

If Charley rakes along the west coast of Florida, everything from Fort Myers north to the Big Bend is going to get hammered. The northeast quadrant of the hurricane causes the most severe damage, due to the counter-clockwise rotation of the storm.

You know what, Gonz? I'll take a hurricane over an earthquake any day. At least you know when a hurricane is coming, and you can get away from it.

I'd have thought that at one point. After moving here 10 years ago I've heard more EBS alerts than the previous 30 years. It creates a sense of unease leaning towards panic in most people. Folks who have been here their whole life run to the store when we're predicted to get more than a couple of inches of snow yet they ignore t-storms. When the NWS alerts to a tornado watch/warning everything goes into shut down mode.

With an earthquake you live your life & suddenly it's happening. In a few seconds it's over & the clean up begins.

6 of one, half dozen of the other.

The sad part about this parking structure is that it had just been completed a few months before. You'd think a building finished in 1993 would withstand an earthquake like that.

Shewwwww....you guys were busy typing away while I was busy shopping away-believe it or not they got water in stores here again. I got as much as think I might need. Water and more Water, nonperishable foods, bags of ice, coolers, parmalat milk-choc.milk, flashlights, candles, matches, back up battery for cell phone, today fill tub and sinks with water and stop up. sternos with seepod (COFFEE) its instant but when you need coffee you need it, you name it we have it. Now make the storm go the other way so I can use this stuff for CAMPING!!!!
YEP! I AM SCARED !!! They did evacuate Sarasota county-think it was for the ppl near the beach though. My Landlord lives 2 blocks from beach there and he had to leave. He helped me do windows yesterday.
It does suck that if or WHEN the electric goes out NO COMPUTER!!!! We have rain with lightning alot and the lights go out so Im imagining we are prolly going to be without electric for awhile. I just Pray we dont get wiped like in Sharky and Gonz's pics....BTW, Thanks guys, I really needed to see those pics, NOT, LOL.

Rose, One course is a private one (server), and the other is a private and public (cook & serve). I float back and forth. Their not that far from each other. Personally, I like the public one better, the members can get VERY snobby......

Well, that depends...had the area ever had such a large earthquake before?? What were the chances of them suffering one (either again or for the first time depending on answer to #1)??

It looks like it's gonna slam Sanibel/Captiva. I hope it doesn't eliminate my favorite spots.

Good luck to you guys down there.

1.9 million evacuated and speeds up to 190kph! Damn...I guess that you have to trade off good weather of rbad sometimes, eh?

Good luck to all Floridans!

And all this on Friday the 13th too :(

Yes, the area not only has suffered from previous earthquakes, but it will suffer more of them in the future. From center-south Mexico all the way up to California (and don't know if it goes further) is located a tectonic fault called San Andres fault. The movements of it caused the earthquake in Mexico (8.x) in 1985.

btw, 6.7 richter, is not a large earthquake ;)
I bet Inkara barely feels an earthquake of magnitude less than 6.

It was the only quake that ever scared me. I was in W Hollywood, at home. my wife & newborn son were here, visiting. Nasty assed jolt.

That particular fault? I don't think so. The area has seen lots of quakes. It's an L.A. suburb. 6.7 is big but not surprisingly so.

DON'T USE Kilo's. 190MPH is a cat5. You scared me using those foreign numbers. :p
