A rational person doesn't need insults to discuss a topic.

For example, I made statements about Spike and his childhood which were fantasy. He clearly said that that kind of free speech was funny and ethical, that its OK to create and propagate lies to for fun. My directly confronting this issue by example became a legitimate point by created by him. Its was not pretty but clearly showed the hypocrisy of the method that he had already utilized more than once here on this forum.

Glenn Beck used the method. I referenced the website that used his own type of logic against him, then you tried to use Beck logic on me.

The hypocrisy is that you don't like this type of logic unless Beck does it. However there are far better examples of your trolling, insults, and personal attacks.

What was powerful about this scenario is the fact that Spike felt is OK to libelous besmirch someone until it was done to him. ..... then it suddenly became far less funny. --- a "teachable moment" as they say these days.

Thank you for the compliment. You have not attacked me personally, nor have I been attacked personally by anyone in quite some time. I'm lucky, I suppose..or I worked hard at politeness or something like that.

I'm sure that you understand that I was merely defining the limits of 'freedom of speech' in general, as it applies IRL.

OTC, I'm afraid, is not IRL...it's a privately owned web-space with specific rules of conduct attached to membership. As I said, most instances of breaking past the barriers of FoS have not occurred here as of late..although I do recall some examples in the past. I'm not going to look them up..frankly, I don't want to belabour the point.

What has been occurring recently is an overdose of bile. Petty insults and direct slams flying hither and tither from all sides, allusions regarding people's intellect or lack thereof - many time being seen as humourous, sometimes being seen as vile. The recipient, of course retaliates..which, in turn causes a retaliation etc ad nauseum. The actual discussion, long forgotten, falls flat.

I came to the RW to discuss events. To add a certain amount of colour commentary to otherwise dry news items, or to sample public opinion on the implications of news items. I also came to the RW for a certain amount of arguing about the news. It's invigorating, frankly, and mentally stimulating... gets the ol' synapses firing on all cylinders. It's fun!

The insults are distracting, though. I'm personally finding it difficult to cut through the fat to get to the meat of the argument. Get to something that I can sink my teeth into. "Where's the beef?"

I am not trying to put a stop to it entirely... I'm in no position to force anyone to do anything, nor do I want OTC to turn into a version of the 'kitten thread'.
What I would like to do is to grab many of the posters by the shoulders, give them a shake and say "Look! Wake the fuck up! You know s/he is trying to bait you..you know there's a fucking hook there. Stop biting!"

Its true that it's a private forum and private property although the idea of FoS can be supported or limited in the private sector. The choices reflects the values held by the community/owner.

Granted....it also reflects the necessity of protecting the owner/operator of said site from legal ramifications and lawsuits. The same can be said for any place of business or center of education. FoS can and is often more restricted there than here. You must admit that this place is not moderated with a heavy hand.

It prolly not a stretch to assume that you have personally experienced the great wonders of bile. A few hours on the bathroom floor repeatedly forcing your guts up into your thorax as saliva pours out of your open mouth. -- bile can be a powerful lesson of what not to do.

It can take some people years to appreciate the relationship of their own behaviors to the resulting actions. Most people effort behavioral changes that will reduce the likely hood they will again force orange goo from their guts. .... some people have to experience it a few more times.

Bile has several functions, some functions are unpleasant and yet serves an important purpose.
