Gas Prices - how are they where you are?

Ok, I read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_oil_crisis and it seems that the high prices were due to low production (Arabs stopped selling actually). AFAIK these days the production is ok, but the price has sky rocketed for other reasons.

edit: btw, I'm kinda glad now that we have constant rise in prices as compared to floating prices. We never get drops in prices, but then again, we are paying like 0.55 USD per liter now.

Whatever the reason behind it, the effect of rocketing fuel prices is the same. That's the common thread between '73 and now.

On Monday I called & told the Mrs to fill up...she did, at $2.579.

Today I went from Grand Rapids Michigan to Indianapolis & back to Ft Wayne...Unleaded regualr is averaging $3.199 gallon. We have one station in town "giving it away" at $2.79 & the line is an hour.

Due to Katrina, 4 refineries are closed, 4 gulf oil platforms are missing, 3 are falling in the ocean & 4 more are closed or temporarily inoperable.

The paranoia continues.

People are calling each other saying that they are going to stop selling gas at midnight tonight. I'll believe it when I see it. As long as there is gas in that tank, they'll sell it for every penny they can get for it.

Simple, really. Some people have too much time on their hands, so they will line up, and complain incessantly about every factory, power plant, or refinery because of any number of reasons, and then drive their enormous, gas-guzzling SUV to the pump and complain about the price of gas. ;)

Passed 4 stations on the way in today. All had gas, and the price for regular ranged from 2.89 to 3.19. The one with 2.89 had lines 5 deep.

I topped up the van last night at a station that was holding at 1.15. I know the guy that runs it, and he told me, he intended to run his tanks dry that night. He already had one one pump dry when I got there at 6pm. This morning, his price was up, but there was a tanker right there, selling him fresh. He'd run himself out of regular by 9, at 1.15.

It doesn't say where...

Heard a report on the radio. The Canadian gov't has asked the RCMP to look into pressing profiteering charges against the oil companies for the last two day's price increases.

CNN just reported that 2 major gasoline supply lines running through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, N&S Carolina and states up the Eastern seaboard are starting up again. Right now, only at 25% capacity, but fuel is flowing.

A US Representative from NC was on the radio this morning, chuckling at all you people panicking about running out of gas. According to this lady, every market in America has up to a 10 day supply of gas already refined and either in a pipeline or in transit at any given moment. The shortages are due to knuckleheads panicking, buying gouged gasoline at ridiculous markups, and creating a false shortage.

Congratulations.
